Big 10 Sports

I had let my XM subscription lapse and was just looking to renew in time for football season. However, the sports channels on both XM and Sirus do not show Big 10 sports coverage any longer. Are there negotiations going on, or are Big 10 fans going to have to do without? I haven't seen any announcements, it just isn't showing up among the Pac-10, SEC, ACC, etc. in the list.

It's interesting you mention that. Here's another way of looking at this....from the Sirius vantage point. Big 10 was part of Best of XM for Sirius subscribers last year. However, go to the College Sports page at Sirius' website and it says this: "In addition to the all the live college football, basketball, baseball and other sports already broadcast on SIRIUS, top college conferences like the Pac-10, Big 12, Big East, SEC and the ACC are now available to SIRIUS subscribers as part of The Best of XM." As you may notice, it lists all of the BCS conferences, but one.

Or if you go to the Best of XM page at the Sirius website, it says this for College Sports: "Games from the top college conferences, including Pac-10, Big 12, Big East, ACC and SEC." Again, a particular conference isn't mentioned.

Something else worth noting is on XM's website, and if you go to their sports page, and where they have the logos for Mad Dog Radio, NFL, MLB, etc. if you click that arrow on the right, it shows all the logos of the BCS conferences, except for the Big 10's.

Something seems to be going on. A poster on xmfan wrote to the conference's media honcho and got a reply saying that XM "should" have Big 10 games this year. Not will, but should. I wonder if the Big 10 is trying to get all of its teams on the same (or both) services instead of the current arrangement: Ohio St. and Michigan on Sirius, everyone else on XM. Or maybe they want to increase the rights fee and SiriXM is balking.

Sirius XM's director of sports programming wrote to a poster on the XMFan board that the Big Ten and Sirius XM couldn't agree on a rights deal for the upcoming season, so as of now, the Big Ten has kissed off satellite radio, with the exception of Ohio State and Michigan, which still are on Sirius under terms of an old exclusive contract signed back when the companies were competing. Sirius XM is free to negotiate agreements with individual schools.

See how the lack of competition is improving the service...

I'm sure this will lead to long-term gains, however. ::)

 not

It's all about cutting losses now and reaching profitability. If the amount of money Sirius XM saves in rights fees is greater than the amount of money it loses from Big Ten fans canceling their subscriptions, then letting the Big Ten go is a good business move.

This looks like another one of those great media negotiations by Big 10 officials similar to the one with Comcast for the Big Ten Network. Whoever is in charge of this stuff inside the Big 10 needs firing, now.

For the last three years I've enjoyed hearing Big Ten football and basketball on XM way the hell out in the woods where we can't get anything on regular radio.

Guess I'll have to switch to Notre Dame. (Naw... nothing could make me root for the Cheatin' Irish)! :)
