Big 4 network stations that have no HD programming at all (local or network)

KLAX and KIEM

A lot stations may broadcast network shows in HD but lack the ability to overlay weather or news related graphics in HD over network shows. Some stations have have another network on a digital subchannel (probably in HD due to bandwith issues)

Add in KATN Fairbanks and KTVA Anchorage. Probably KJUD Juneau too, but no confirmation on that one.

Otherwise, the two you mention are the only two I can think of off the top of my head.

WSJV South Bend, IN itself is HD (network & syndicated programming, if the syndicated programming is HD), but there's no HD programming at all on the local level (local news & any other locally produced shows). They're a Fox affiliate.

I want to say wlne is with out local hd, news and all non network programing. With in the past year all non network programing is up converted but not in true hd.

I imagine there aren't a lot of primary, non-analog LPTV Big Four affiliates that can't at least pass network HD.

In Ohio, WHIZ/18 Zanesville (NBC) only started passing along NBC programming in HD a year or so ago. They made a rather big deal about it. Other network affiliates out of Columbus, including that market's NBC affiliate (Media General's WCMH/4), are available in HD on cable in Zanesville, and have been long before WHIZ finally made the switch.

But there are lots that cannot display weather warnings, snow closings, or even the station ID without down converting the network feed to SD.

Yeah, that is the case all over the place. Until last year, the NBC in Charleston couldn't upload weather warnings without doing that. Even now, they still don't carry any syndicated show in HD. This means no Wheel, Jeopardy or Oprah in HD. They had ACC football until a couple years ago. The only HD they do is from the network.

Fox here I believe doesn't have any HD for syndication still. They can't do weather warnings or anything like that.

Everyone in Green Bay has converted to HD syndicated programming except WGBA in Green Bay, the NBC affiliate. But it's more a "who cares" in that case as their syndicated product consists of "Better", the old Fox game shows which have bombed in syndication this year ("Lyrics" and "5th Grader") and "Inside Edition", all which don't offer any HD at all. Their sister station WACY (MyNet) also doesn't offer anything but the MyNet schedule in HD.

Some decent-sized markets are still lagging. We're market #80 or thereabouts here in Rochester, and none of our Big 4 can do anything syndicated in HD yet. Only one (Newport's ABC affiliate, WHAM-TV) does local news in HD, but because it uses a hubbed master control at WSYR-TV in Syracuse, it still can't do syndication or spots in HD until the hub is also upgraded.

Watertown's WWNY will go back to 4:3 during HD programming to run banners on the bottom of the screen. The nice part is that if its weather related they will usually leave the cable HD feed alone and the banner will only be seen on the SD and analog cable channels. Since Time Warner runs their own EAS system which works on HD channels its nice that they can at least leave the cable HD feed alone most of the time. They still produce their news in 4:3 with camera technology that looks like its from the 1980s.

Meanwhile, here in Cleveland, all the major network affiliates can do HD weather graphics overlays/syndicated HD (not all shows, but most) and the like, but this is a top 20 market.

Well, it was last time I looked. :D

They are also all doing HD news, and I believe all but the CBS/MyNet affiliate are doing field news in HD. The ABC affiliate has live HD from the field, and I think the new cell-modem-powered backpacks the NBC affiliate just added can do HD live, too.
