Big Band on KMRI

I checked KMRI last night around 9:00 and found Big Band music. No spots, promos, or announcements of any kind.

It's still going as of now, more than 15 hours later.

New format? Stunt? Anybody know?

I gotta say I'm loving the music.

A quick check of various sources didn't help much. The Sports Byline USA network, which had been feeding 1550 for most of its operating hours, is still up and running. KMRI's website still has the "SLC Sports Radio" logo and little else (unless they have a new website that I can't find yet).

Unless it actually lasted less than a year, the local Dino Costa show would be on the air as I write this if they were still intending to continue the Sports format. If the stream is the actual on-air programming, that is not the case.

Of course, up until a year ago, their continued existence was not very assured. (See Wikipedia.)

I presume "no announcements of any kind" does not preclude them saying "KMRI West Valley City" once an hour.

At 1:19 PM they crossfaded to:

A college fight song (I think it was BYU).

Then to Elton John’s Saturday Night’s All Right for Fighting, with crowd noise and an announcer from a BYU game mixed in occasionally.

Then Dino Costa’s show, beginning with the words, “Let’s get this straight. Absolutely nobody is listening to this show.”

It’s a repeat of yesterday’s show.

Well, let's see what happens at the end of his show, then. Doesn't sound like the all-Sports format is sticking around.

I checked in a few times late yesterday and early today. He might have done a new show at 4PM on Tuesday, but I didn't listen long enough. From what i could tell, the Monday show was repeating from 9PM until early this morning, maybe 4AM. Then it was silence. I just checked at 11:30 AM and Dino's show is repeating. I'm not sure whether it's Monday's show or Tuesday's.

Sounds to me like this is going to be another "wait and see" situation ...

The KMRI plot thickens.

Over the weekend, they were silent. Today I'm hearing "standards" with singers. The interesting thing: I have yet to recognize a song. Not that I know every song, but Shazam can't identify them, either.

I'm not saying it's AI generated, but if it were, I wouldn't mind. Some of the songs are pretty good.

This brings up an interesting point about AI generated music Could a radio station play nothing but AI generated music, and completely avoid music royalty fees?
