So I finally got round to listening and I honestly did not know what to think. Anyone have any comments? Was taking UB off the air and replacing him with an L.A. morning show a good move?

The show is o.k. It's easy to follow- but has no local feel. even though its in LA, i think it should relate somehow locally. Also, it doesnt connect or fit well with the station at all.
Isn't UB going to another shift at Power?? He's still working there, i thought i heard him this weekend

So here's my two cents:
I've never been a big fan of "non-local" feeds, because I'd like to give the listeners enough credit to know the difference between someone who is local and someone who is recording little snippets trying to sound like they're local. That's what Kid Kraddick does and he is still scoring some pretty nice ratings in the target demo.
Big Boy on the other hand is not trying to sound like a local morning show like Kraddick does when you hear him talking about the spurs, and other local pre-recorded breaks. I like that and I think it gives a station more credibilty when you acknowledge that your morning show is major market syndication instead of trying to make people believe that they are here. The only think I think that may piss me off about him is if he starts pumping up the lakers, with thousands of spurs fans listening!
Like it or not, that means The Morning Mess is going to benefit tremendously because they are accessible, and probably won't cost a lot for endorsements, etc. Where Big Boy will probably come with an LA price tag. In regards to entertainment value and product quality however, Big Boy's show is way better than the Morning Mess and a MASSIVE upgrade to Power's morning show. The Morning Mess is fun and local, but I can only handle small doses of Xavier's voice. He sounds like he spits all over the mic when he talks, and I just don't dig the yankee accent.
There have been other posts about how great UB was etc....I'm sorry but the guy did not impress me at all. All he seemed to talk about was how drunk and stupid he got at the club before. You could totally tell the interviews were fake, and he repeated them occasionally which I think was so stupid. Corina was a breath of fresh air on that show when she came on and I think she ended up carrying the show right up to the day she left.
I guess we'll see what happens....

I was listening on the way to work this morning and the guy sux… plain and simple. There was this bit that he did where he was trying to get this lady to accept this Halloween party and the lady gave it away that it wasn’t real!! Her reaction was totally contrived and over the top. Most people would have hung up but no. She kept going and even yelling when it seemed at an odd time. This guys credibility went out the window as far as I am concerned.

well sucks or not he must be doing something right to not only be broadcasting from market #2 but all over the country.
silentmajority: I'm a promoter and I travel the state of Texas a lot, and parts of Lousianna (NO,BA). I hollared at UB once to host something for me, but it was over my budget, but I'm not gonna hate on him for that. But, I have to agree with you about the local thing with Big Boy. Also, you seem to have a grudge against the station and UB. Are you in that building? A lot of people don't understand that a person's talent, or lack of, is a lot of times a reflection of the managment. Every thing was repeated on that show. It sounded like a radio version of vh1, always airing that damn I Love New York show over and over and over and over and over. They told him to do that- that was a corporate mandate. I did notice a decline in UB's talent over the last few months- you can tell he knew what was going to happen and look now, he's GONE. UB's major market and small market SA will not understand him unless he spends more time there and gets the right morning team around him. Corina was definitely a breath of fresh air and did make the show sound wayyy better, why do you think morning shows have sidekicks..that was the point. imagine Kid Kraddick alone.... (by the way, Kid Kraddick sounds WAYYY better here in Dallas.. he's more local and at a lot of events here.. here he is definitely seen. I last saw him at a baseball game) but if he were alone, it'll be wack and boring. Every thing has to compliment each other. Put UB at a REAL station and you'll hear the difference immediately. Obviously, he got the morning gig in SA for some reason. No ne just walks into a morning gig that easy...Check his track record, he's been in the nation's biggest markets and top radio stations like K104. You sound like an inside HATER, and from the comments you made about local and endorsements, you're probably someone from sales, that cant even sell a :10 sponsor.
For Power to win, they need to back off from all this "the most music" crap and get entertaining. Every station in the game is playin the same music, how will you step out of the box? The truth is I'm not scared to let you and everyone else on this board know that yes I do work in that building. So now that we all know that, allow me to clarify that what I post here is merely MY opinion like everybody else. There's no inside hating or anything like that. I love the stations. I love the company and no I cannot sell :10sec sponsorships because I'm not a salesperson. As for how I feel about UB, as a person he and I had differences...but it has nothing to do with how I feel about his talent. From the moment he walked in the door I was never impressed. Note that I didn't say he sucked, I just said he didn't impress me.
I really have to call you out a little though and say that I can't understand what makes you think San Antonio is "small market". I got my start in radio in a "small market", of about 15,000 people.... come on, dude... get a clue San Antonio is market number 29...not exactly Dallas or LA, but most certainly not Victoria, Fredricksburg, or some other BumF--Egypt small market..
Second, you want to talk about how UB is major market and worked at K104.....hmmm does anybody beside you know him from K104? I have a lot of radio friends in Dallas, and none of them are very familiar with jocks that are on the air overnight at ANY station much less K104... the reason he got the gig in San Antonio is because he happened to have a connection with the consultant... A good chunk of Radio people got into the business because of WHO they know not WHAT they know including me...
Third, since you are self admitting to being a promoter I'll take what you say with a grain of salt...most promoters wish they could get into radio, or used to be in Radio in the glory days before consolidation...hmm which one are you?
Last but not least, "That's right, I'm a promoter and the SA market needs HELP! I won't spend another dollar with those stations" You probably shouldn't because you'll lose your ass with what you THINK you know about radio...Flyers and myspace are cheaper, homie... besides, there are plenty of promoters here that do get it and are already spending money with Power and the Beat.
Now back to Big Boy, I stand by what I said about him, the Morning Mess, and UB and I think it is going to be interesting to see what happens over the course of time...The Beat is holding down the fort and Power is still very much the new kid on the block...and it is fun to watch to say the very least.
So before we get into a pissing match just know that I'm not going to respond to whatever you reply, because I don't post very often, but I will continue to share my opinion on this board from time to time because that's what it is for. A somewhat anonymous and hopefully peaceful environment to share opinions and info with fellow Radio heads....

Probably one of the best threads Ive read on all of this Board. I do have to say that San Antonio is very passionate about there radio.
Ive havent had the time nor want to listen to big boy because I dont believe that syndication is good for FM or AM maybe sat but thats it. I feel like this ... if you like LA radio ... move to LA .... if you like New York Radio ... move to New York. I was born and raised in Miami but my job now requires lots of travel ... and I enjoy hearing local radio cause it reflects each city/town. If syndication was the best solution why not make all cities identical ... buildings... food.... etc.. it would be boring no ? Then why is it ok with Radio.
I heard Ub with and without Corina ... I liked him. She was great too as a "sidekick". I am not saying UB was the best Morning Jock in Radio nor the worst. Ive just been in Major Markets (top 10 not dissing SA for being29) and heard worse than Ub and been in market 200+ and heard better. All of them were local ... local ..... LOCAL !
