Big Boy Leaves Power 106, Jumps Ship to iHeart's Return of 92.3 The Beat

Strange the judge would wait until after his current deal lapses on Feb 28 to even hear arguments.

Emmis Communications is seeking a temporary restraining order to prevent Big Boy from going to another station. The request will be considered at a Los Angeles Superior Court hearing on March 3. In other words, Big Boy, don't count on that $3.5 million just yet![/QUOTE

Emmis would take out a restraining order to prevent Big Boy from leaving for the competition. I saw this coming long before it did. Power would possibly lose its listeners base after Big Boy goes because he was a mainstay on the station for years. Even The Beat considered hiring Big Boy away from Power a few years back.

It's a question of what station will tweak to rhythmic oldies since KHHT dropped the format completely. It's been a week since 92.3 made the switch. KTWV could possibly fill that void but then again they're afraid to let go of their smooth jazz tracks.

The ratings for January 2015 will be out shortly.

It will NOT reflect the current state of 105.9, 100.3, or 923. FM.
Give it a couple of books to see what happens.

Yeah I noticed that when I went to Mediabase. Hot 92.3 is officially no more. Coming next week KRRL FM will be on the Mediabase Urban panel. That's my prediction.

MediaBase and BDS will report the plays on KRRL, but I do not think they will be on the panel until they have a book to be able to use to create chart weighting... so not on the panel yet.

Thanks for the correction. Next month is ideal then.
Maybe it is better to stop making predictions about things that you don't have "process" knowledge about.

This board is a treasure trove of information, if you know how to ask the right questions. David has been in radio longer than I've been alive. He has owned stations, programmed stations, managed stations and station groups, and still is an active consultant. In the area of Spanish-language radio, I don't think there is anyone in the business who has a more extensive knowledge base.

David also knows the process of music research and testing (as does TheBigA, and as do I). We also know how to use Mediabase and how their process works, and we know the relationship between that process and the Nielsen ratings.

TheBigA and I are active programming consultants. We have the perspective (as does David, again) to see what the differences are between markets and how to adjust for those differences.

Michael Hagerty, while in a non-programming role at his current station, had the same advantage the rest of us had, which was being put in the PD chair early in his career. Once you've had that experience, it becomes impossible to look at the business using a lesser perspective. Mike's also better than almost anyone I know in the interpretation of ratings and what they really mean to the stations.

And there are other professionals here with varying levels of knowledge in specific areas, augmented by non-industry people who have taken advantage of the situation to improve their own understanding and thus post on-the-mark comments ... sometimes even before the pros, but every bit as correct.

Unfortunately, it is easy to put one's foot securely in their mouth when they post based upon a less than adequate knowledge base about whatever they are posting about. Just today, you've "predicted" that Mediabase would change 92.3's status within a week ... then within a month ... and have had to be corrected both times. This isn't meant to be a putdown, although I know there will be some who take it that way, but when you don't have the knowledge of how something like Mediabase works, policy-wise, it is better to ask "when will it happen" than to "predict" when it will. When you make too many such predictions you run the risk of gaining a "knows nothing" reputation, and I don't like to see that when it's so easy to sit back and learn.

You did some really good analytical work on the past formats of several stations relevant to this discussion. Don't let that cause you to get ahead of what you still need to add to your knowledge base and undo the positive contributions you've made to the discussion so far.

Just checked Mediabase's Urban reporting panel. KRRL was removed from the list, but could come back at anytime.

April 2015 will be here before we know it. I hope they get live jocks by then and bring some life into the station. The 10,000 joints in a row is getting old and tired. They are the same "joints" such Nicki Minaj f/Chris Brown, Drake & Lil Wayne "Only".

When you have one of those names, then and only then will you be allowed to make predictions.

Let's stay on topic folks. Now KRRL is the officially calls for 92.3. Do you think signal challenged KDAY could go to Rhythmic Oldies direction and snatch up KHHT's former listeners?

Honestly, I doubt it. Their current owner, Alex Meruelo, stepped in after the sale to the Chinese fell apart and bought KDAY because he had been a fan of the original on 1580. A year ago, when he took ownership, he said he was committed to the classic hip-hop and rap format because of that.

I don't see him changing his mind just because of something iHeart did.
