"BIG" change

on June 01 ....The  BIG  change is coming to 96.9 KGY aka "Real Country"

ANYONE know what this "CHANGE" might be? ???

I'll say this....

IF the drop the REAL COUNTRY network.... :'(

I'll NEVER listen to this station again

Yes, I KNOW what that change is gonna be! And it's about time Olympia finally had a station that played Moorish music from Mauritania, 24/7! ;)

First 97.3, then 97.7, now 96.9...  Seems weird this is all happening in a short area of FM bandspace as of late.

As for the frequency in question.... LMA with Clear Channel, to put KJR Sports Radio on it?  Take over 97.7 FM's previous Classic Hits format (and get their DJs jobs again)?  Oldies?  Urban AC?  Top 40?  Spanish? Using the station as a translator for another station?  I could also see them moving the AC format from their AM 1240 station to their FM side (To compete with KRXY).....maybe do a swap and put Real Country on AM?

I saw that KGY's website is undergoing "a change" itself.

As for the bandspace, all the changes sound like a virus KIRO started, going into the adjecent FM frequencies after they flipped 97.3, then KOMO flipping 97.7...who's next after KGY?  Is Jack going out the door next?

That "BIG" change (according to my sources) is this:

FINALLY, KGY's waking up that sleeping giant they have at 96.9 FM and doing a bit more "live and local". Word is they've hired someone from the market to do mornings and I bet a number of ex-Eagle staffers have been flinging their packages towards the Olympia waterfront. I'll leave it to the speculators to guess on whether or not they keep the Real Country format.

And I wouldn't expect any big changes to the AM.

If any of you listen to this station, isnt the SMILING JAY guys they have now doing evenings (on the AM sisde, with breaks on the FM side)...sounds an awful like "Tall Paul" Formerly of KMPS....are my ears wrong ??? ???

At last we may be seeing the beginning of a re-birth of radio...as we used to know it.

Smilin' Jay was formerly on KXXO for many years.

Does this mean the long-running simulcast with the AM is ending? Does this mean that KGY will position itself as a separate radio station which it should have done years ago?

AFAIK the FM hasn't been a simulcast for the last several years, instead running ABC's "Real Country" format. Dick Pust had been doing some updates in the mornings but otherwise it was on the bird.

I haven't listened to the FM in a while, but has anyone noticed that in the last few months that KGY AM seems more... modern? I actually find myself leaving the radio on during the music when I'm within about 2 miles of Olympia.

My bad. I was referring to the morning news block. KGY-FM always appeared to be the step-sister. It is so easy to share the news and sound like two totally separate radio stations.

Re: "BIG" change? No need to worry...

Well I had an opportunity to hear some of the new morning show and honestly - it was severely underwhelming. Sorta like listening to a bad traffic accident.

This "Smilin' Jay" character sounds like a bad parody of a early '80s puker, his "sidekick" (aka "Traffic Brad") sounds like he was plucked off the mean streets of Elma and the delivery of the news guy (Steve something) puts people to sleep in an instant.

While I commend the effort to commit to a little "live and local" - this station sounds terrible even by small-market standards. Maybe KGY management should dial up Wolfenbarger's properties to hear the right way to do it.

Same Smilin' Jay that was on KXXO for years. Nice fella. Interesting change from AC to Country. Best of luck to him!

I haven't had the opportunity to listen yet, but one of my friends was complaining that the music in the morning doesn't match up to the "Real Country" format.

So I decided with some of the negative comments I'd take a drive and have a listen.

Thank goodness the FUN is back in radio on Real Country mornings. I did some research on Smilin Jay: most listened to jock on KXXO: so I think KGY management know exactly what they're doing ;)

The music sounded like "real" country to me (not my choice actually!), Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, etc etc and at one point I actually laughed out loud. I can't say THAT for some of the boring morning shows around here!

This afternoon I took a listen to KGY AM, something I've not done since I was a kid years ago. OMG, really some "properties" could learn from this, and I am not surprised it showed up on PPM. I know previously many have said "elevator" about KGY AM, but there really must have been a change of management or something. Sounded slick, professional, and whoever the guy with an accent is (?Australian?british?) was a breath of fresh air. Wow times have changed in 15 years.

SeattleRadioPro (pro=?) anyways, I cannot agree with you: all totally refreshing, and what an amazing thing to do in these economic times, where other stations are being bought out by "big" guys. I reckon we should watch the ratings, and watch what KGY does next.

Really I wasn't sure what I was gonna hear, but I thought it was cool.
