Big changes at Asheville's WQNQ Star 104.3!

I don't know if WFBC really targets the Asheville market, so it's good to see they have a CHR now! I've been a long advocate for this switch.

WFBC covers Asheville fairly well (HD signal in some places is better than analog), was trying to convince Intercom to change the WSPA translator (W249AR) to WFBC. No luck on that.

This was to be expected with WOXL's switch. It was only a matter of time.

When is someone going to buy WMXF and put GOOD music back on it? To me Glenn Beck was evil because his name was the first real proof that what I read here about the station was true. The station's web site should have siad, "Jeff Rollins". I doubted that Glenn Beck was filling in for Jeff.

All that I can say is that it's about time. While B93.7's signal makes it to Asheville, it's spotty in several places around town. Same issue with Electric 94.9's signal in Asheville.

...ahh...but back in the good ole days Asheville had a great (solid - not spotty) signal on a little unheard of FM called Kiss. I remember an old Kiss liner that said something like, "The only station strong enough to punch through Beaucatcher Mountain." I doubt Star 104.3 punches through the Beau.

And country had a great signal (with real live personality) on WWNC -- Fred Brown, Scotty Rhodharmer, Wiley Carpenter, John Roten, and others were right there visiting alongside in your car, at home, or at my favorite childhood camping spot at Lake Powhatan. The campfire and WWNC - a great combination. But, I digress -- sorry.

It is ironic that 26 years ago almost to the very day another CHR was launched that really shook things up.... Later they would put their boots on and go country... CC1

And with that note, let's remember part of Asheville's Top 40 history with some audio clips and notes, courtesy of former WISE/Kiss air talent Radar.

Memo to Clear Channel/Asheville: Please take notes of how energetic both WISE and Kiss-FM sounded "back in the day" and apply it to Star!

I'd like to see 99.9 & 104.3 switch freqencies.
Star 99.9 & Kiss Country 104.3 OR better yet, 99.9 Kiss FM & Star Country 104.3.

a CHR format on 99.9 could easily compete with B93.7 in Upstate SC & Electric 94.9 in the Tri-Cities.

It would keep the country format in Asheville (maybe even also Simulcast on 104.9 WQNS)
while it would also reduce overlap with sisters WESC & WSSL.

It makes sense to me, there's WAY too many country choices here.

I can't understand why both 93.7 & 98.9 don't apply for a booster for their main signals into Asheville.
Asheville is clearly within the protected 60 dbu contour for both stations.
