Big Changes at Double O

Friend of mine told me that Chuck McKay resigned and Tim Miller was named GM of the stations. That must mean changes are coming, thankgoodness.

Oh Dear? Sounds like Oz is posting now. Tim Miller knows radio. It will take some time to get things in order...but then look at the rest of the Columbia market. Now there's something you can say "Oh Dear" about.

I had wondered why we had not seen Tim on in the morning on WACH. I guess this explains things and also makes me wonder if the comapny that owns WACH is buying these stations and is combining all of the studios in one building.

Ed/89, from what I heard Tim Miller was the push behind "Flashback," the 5th gold-based station in the market. Great move that was. And "knowing radio" as a programmer is far different than being a GM of a cluster that is still in turnaround. That's something I learned from experience.

Steve/Dude...What 94.3 became was not what we, Tim and I, were going to do with that station. We had intentions of programming it in house. Then came Chuck. He brought in this satellite programming you hear now...no local anything. He, as you know at the kickoff, gave Tim the credit. This is not what it was supposed to be. I call it schizophrenic radio. No true identity...Flashback 94 three and then Classic Hits. I stay away from it because the programming bites for this market. You can't massage it when you need to so on so forth. I am and always will be a proponent for playing what the people want to hear not what corporate wants you to play. I like all the other ole timers miss the real art of programming and the competition.
Technical issues have been a major problem...everybody is an engineer ya know. The only set of stations that broadcast in quadrophonic inside the office area...There is a lot of cleaning up to do and better things will come. Congrats on your station. I really like the programming.

Dudefan, not trying to be rude but, are you ever positive about anything? You seem down on people you don't know and you have a comment on just about everything and it seems never uplifting. 89 sounds like he gets it. from the limited information that I know from a friend who is close to the entire thing , Miller is the first, I guess you could say radio person leading those stations. From the looks of it the Double O stations can't get worse. Well, they could go dark, I guess that would be worse. lol But, good grief I say give them all a chance.

I call it the way I see it. And we all have reps in this town. One of the things I have learned from experience is that human behavior is pretty consistent. Thus I have a high level of confidence based on my observations and what I know about the players how things are going to shake out. I could be wrong, so I am keeping them to myself.

I will say this: whether a certain station is "Classic Hits" or locally programmed "Oldies" it's still going to be the 5th gold-based radio station in the market and either the second classic rock station or the second oldies station. You pick whether that is a formula for success.

As for Tim Miller being the first radio person to manage that cluster of stations. That is patently false. Agree or disagree with Chuck McKay's workstyle. The fact is that Chuck has programmed a number of successful stations over his career in other markets. He also managed to bring the CRG stations to breakeven, which no one else was able to accomplish. And he did it with almost no resources and staff.

Some people start believing the hype that is told in the broadcast industry, some just look at the truth and take it for face value. others actually make their own decisions, I guess it is all about where you stand and what you believe or are willing to swallow so to speak. As for Double O it is time for a change so let's see what really happens now.

I guess anyone could break even including McKay at a station that appears to have little staff, promotions and I'm sure a ton of cutbacks. It does not take much to keep the lights on at that point however, is he (or anyone) truly a success when the stations have been at the bottom of the market for so long? You need to figure the stations potential and on that note McKay like the rest of the folks in and out of the place have not done well. I hope Miller has better luck than the rest.

Is anyone in Columbia doing a format very well? (Maybe WXRY but, its not a player) The term "Gold Based" is used loosely any more for its hard to pin down Magic and Flashback neither truly fall into Classic Hits, Oldies and they are not Classic Rock. Only TCB falls into what used to be called "Gold Based AC." Even Media Base is having a difficult time classifying these hybrd stations.

92.1 and 94.3 need to have something people want. 92.1, well, 97.5 covers it very well. And 94.3, well, 98.5, and 102.3 already cover it well. If they had some balls, one of the stations would take on WNOK. Call me crazy. Just my opinion.
