BIG CHANGES AT WYSL AM-FM

I'm curious as to where in the FCC rules you see anything prohibiting Bob from doing any of those things? He's absolutely free to ask his listeners for money. I can think of several commercially-licensed, for-profit stations that do just that, including one run by another very independent friend of mine named Bob with a Rochester radio connection: Bob Bittner's WJIB 740 in Boston annually raises most of its operating expenses by going on the air and asking listeners to pledge. Bob doesn't offer a charitable tax deduction for listeners, since he's not a charity, he's a for-profit business.

But if he wanted to rework his business operation into a 501c3 nonprofit and relicense WJIB as a noncommercial station, he could...just as RCS could, for that matter. Needless to say, WYSL won't do that, and shouldn't. As the founder and owner of a for-profit business, Bob can do something no "Public station" can do: he can fully and completely reap the proceeds of his 25+ years of hard work for his own use. (As well he should: it's his candy shop, and after a quarter-century of watching him build it, I'll defend his right to do with it whatever he please

Thanks for that input. I concur...RCS is on track. He could, but won't! I like the candy shop analogy! i just hope his coffee on tap for a visit stands up!! (the Love Canal thing is iffy...but I'm way over that...but I do like the power parameters he presents!!

What I find interesting is that for a station reportedly that does not have any listeners, there is a great deal of response to the changes made at WYSL on this web site. Not everyone who has commented I'm certain is connected with the broadcasting industry either. Kind of makes one wonder about the ratings system doesn't it?

Anyways again I wish Bob and his crew good luck with their changes at 1040-AM and 92.1 FM.

I'll agree with the guy who gave this thread props for reaching five pages, if for no other reason that Big A and Rox haven't gone nuclear (yet) and although there's been some political posturing, the thread stayed radio centered. Say what you will, but it's what makes this a much better board than so many others.

Mutually exclusive. This board is cumed by people well outside the reach of WYSL's potent daytime signal. BTW, as to your wife's Arbitron diary, one diary doesn't move the needle in a universe of 900 to 1200 diaries. Much depends on the in-tab. Much depends on diary placement. As Savage noted, there are thresholds of listening, for better or worse. Maybe your wife's diary was flagged because so much listening time was attributed to one station. It happens. And then there are the diary editors, which would take a thread in itself.

Savage runs a tight ship. With the change in network news affiliation and Salem as its national sales rep, one wonders, are the network compensation rates be better than ABC, and is Salem interested in his facility?

Big A noted that ABC Radio News' reputation may suffer because of its association with ABC TV; the same applies to Fox Radio News and Fox Cable. His point however stands, Fox Radio News and ABC Radio News play it down the middle, as does CBS.

Phil noted NPR's equilibrium in reporting the decision and giving fair and equal time to the opinions from legal experts and listeners. Major point made in that regard. Comparing WBFO to WBEN, the difference was startling. You can only imagine, then again, maybe not. It was that pronounced. WBFO news did a thorough job with interviews and reactions. WBEN's news department was on the ball, but it was what happened between newscasts that spoiled the stew.

CNN and Fox Cable dropped the ball in first reporting the SCOTUS overturned the Affordable Care Act. NPR got it right. To their credit, CNN did a story on why and how it got the story wrong and Fo, with its tail between its legs, backtracked quickly. I suspect CNN got it wrong because its reporter/analyst/producer read the SYLLABUS of the decision, wherein CJ Roberts states the ACA does not hold under the Commerce Clause. It's understandable that a reporter can make this mistake because the decision was complex. There were four underlying issues argued on a number of grounds. The real pros were meticulous in analyzing it, beginning with the cover page. Some immediately went to the Dissent to get quickly get to the Court's decision, but even the Dissent was dense.

"Don't forget that a portion of the federal taxes RCS and his radio station pays goes to his competitor. "

There are lots of people at 'XXI who may WISH that were true a few weeks a year during membership drives...but a grand total of $0 in federal, state and local tax money goes to operating expenses of nearly all the country's public radio stations (with the exception of those few areas of the country with state-owned or state university-owned stations--and we don't have any in our neck of the woods any more now that WNED, a non-governmental community outlet, has bought WBFO). Like their commercial brethren, stations like WXXI or WNED have to raise all their operating money from the same private individuals and businesses that commercial stations do. If a station like WXXI is a competitor, it's basically the same competition that he faces from WHAM.

It's so educational here on the Buffalo-Rochester board! ;) :D For example, I've been reading all kinds of things here I never knew....about ME! ;D Let's see...where to start?

Breaking news from Phillip Airtime: I get free use of broadcast spectrum! Whew, that's great to hear, because for the last fifteen years or so I've had to write a check to the Federal government every September - the memo line reading - oddly - "Spectrum Use Fee" - and let me tell you, it ain't cheap. Great to hear the SUF has been repealed! Now I can hire Mark Giardina back!

That brings us to the strikeout from our favorite suspect, BigA. He sonorously intones that Herman Cain's "having an affair" is news. Maybe it is, but that wasn't the point. Carrying the story for TEN DAYS consecutively was definitely biased (especially when the story started to look suspect. And the Cain pinata was followed consecutively by similar predatory coverage on the next three GOP frontrunners. That's not news, that's advocacy. I renew my challenge for anyone here to detail similar nonjournalism from SRN...specific example, please.) Strike two: the "network of Paul Harvey" can't be liberal. Huh?? Why not? Do dead guys run the network?? The count is oh-and-two. And...THREE! BigA worked at ABC and he can authoritatively declare: there is no bias today, since he worked there, he knows!?!!

Thanks for the chuckles, BigA - I've got to go check the "ERP" of the Nautel AM transmitter.

The man had an affair. Probably several. Fox News covered it as long as everyone else. But if you're happy with Salem, good for you. It doesn't matter to me.

First let me apologize. We went nearly six pages (!?) before I bumbled into the tripwire that evoked the demon. Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa.

Joe Laskey and Kevin Meath get a promotion, Mr. Savage adds more local news, and we get seven pages of dicsussion about his motives? Could it be that he's serving the audience that dominates his part of CNY? I'm pretty sure that the farmers and small-town folks who make up the bulk of his listening area lean a bit farther right than the elitists in the University district of Rochester. Besides, they have WHAM to rail about.

Good luck with the changes, Bob. I hope that the compensation rates are better, and that Salem will show more interest in selling ads for you than ABC radio. Though I mourn the lack of objective reporting in today's media, I doubt that your audience will be irreparably harmed by your network newscasts, slanted or not.

SUF = "Spectrum Use Fee." You can start any time, El Marko. WYSL is where all the cool kids hang out these days. Did I forget to mention a new thing we have here - it's called "the reverse signing bonus??" ;) :D

I learned how to do this kind of thing from the New York legislature.

I learned how to do this kind of thing from the New York legislature.

There is SO much to learn here in NY!! None if it is in the traditional educational system :'(

I'm thinking maybe a course in "Loopholes 101" would be more productive than, let's say English 101...or maybe Basic Math...

(Savage, I'd like to know more about that "reverse signing bonus"!! I have an idea..but I didn't think it was real or enforceable...my bad! :-[)

As someone who know a little bit about radio news I've listen to WYSL since the station dropped ABC and went to Salem and really haven't noticed that much of a difference.

Salem seems to fit the format WYSL is going for and I haven't heard (as of yet) any editorial comments or slanted delivery from their newscasts.

This is just one person's opinion but I don't see what the issue is?

He should have waited until his own network, CBS, weighed in.

Interesting that BEN still runs CBS News. Some conservative news/talkers dropped them during the Katie Couric crisis, in the same way Savage is dropping ABC now. Guilt by association.

When I think of CBS News, I of course think "courage". ;) :D ;D

So now WYSL is running Salem news. Has the world ended? Are we looking over the edge. Has anyone's lifestyle changed?
