CLEAR CHANNEL is selling a simulcast pair serving the HUNTSVILLE, AL to CUMULUS for $3.3 million. Oldies WWXQ/TRINITY-HUNTSVILLE and its simulcast partner WXQW/MERIDIANVILLE (KOOL 94.1) will go to CUMULUS in the deal, which also involves the move of CUMULUS' Urban AC WHRP/TULLAHOMA-HUNTSVILLE (downgrading from a Class C1 to a Class C2 with new city of license NEW MARKET) on the tower of CLEAR CHANNEL's Country WDRM/HUNTSVILLE, and requires CUMULUS to not object to the move-in of CLEAR CHANNEL's WLAY/TUSCUMBIA-FLORENCE to the HUNTSVILLE market (using WXQW's city of license, MERIDIANVILLE; WXQW has applied to move its COL to GURLEY).

Goodbye Kool. Now, what does Clear Channel do with WLAY (revive Kool?) and does Cumulus treat the XQ's as simulcast partners, or do they launch two new formats? <P ID="signature">______________

WLAY will go oldies after the move-in. The WXQs have done surprisingly well as Kool considering that those are two horrible signals that can only be received in east Huntsville(94.1) or middle-of-nowhere Morgan/Lawrence counties(92.5). The format would undoubtedly do better on a class C signal like 100.3.

As for what Cumulus will do with 94.1/92.5, you pretty much have to keep the pair together or use each of them to simulcast another station. Maybe putting the Ump on one or both of them would get people to actually listen to it?

Will any of these changes result in a new active or alternative rock station in north Alabama that I can pick up clearly? If it doesn't, it's not that much of a change from the current radio wastleland.

It may just be me, but it seems like maybe SilentGreg wants an alt rock station he can hear. If that's what he want's I sure wish he'd just come out and say it.

Sure beats the constant whining. XM and Sirius are only about $10 a month buddy... knock yourself out.

with 92/94, yea rhight, even if it went alt you'd have trouble getting it in spots, 92.5 is in trinity and 94.1 is 240w from MonteSano, and if you can't get rocket's 12kw then I doubt you would get 94.1, Here at my house, 9 miles due north of the Capshaw mountain tower site 94.1 is plagued with interference from 93.9 and 94.3 with my outdoor antenna (though the antenna is pointing north most of the time to pull in WNRQ so that does ofcourse effect it) WWXQ (92.5) is probably the absolute worst signal IN Huntsville, followed by WEUP and WTAK. and the move in of WLAY? how can CC move a station in that they no longer own?, I googled for WLAY fm and WXQW and found http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DA-03-4036A1.txt
noting that it is from 2003, CC sold WLAY and the entire shoals cluster within the past year

Yeah, about $10 a month plus the additional equipment costs such as the special radio receiver you need to hear the programming and the joy of credit card bills. Howard Stern sure is forgetting to tell everyone about that.

No thanks, I just buy some Alt rock cds with cash and look out for any news about new rock stations. By the way, I was asking a question and stating the current status of northeast Alabama radio, not whining.

Howard Stern has actually almost never forgot to mention it. He constantly compares satellite radio with Cable TV.
If you don't want to listen to Howard just get XM - their "special radio receiver" is on sale for under $100 in many places. So yeah, you'll also have to pay a one time fee for installation, and a monthly fee that is likely much smaller then all the money you spend on CDs or at the bar...
If you're that hungry/thirsty to hear Rock music all day long, and you don't have the millions of dollars to purchase and operate such a station in your area, and you don't want to spend half your paycheck on all the great music you like, then XM and Sirius are giving you a very fair choice.
Also, don't forget that in the coming years more places will be completely Wi-Fi, so if you're willing to spend several hundred dollars on a decent laptop, or a state of the art cell phone, you can listen FOR FREE to as many Rock stations from around the world as you like 24/7.
