Big Changes coming to KTRB?

2 Live Stews was on before noon (very popular sports talk show from Atlanta), so would they be going all sports?

That is my guess as well. Near everything on the home page is sports oriented. Ads for the A's in two places, an ad for Tony La Russa's project, an ad for Sports Byline, an ad for Ring Talk (boxing program) and the poll on the left is also sports related.

Given that sports talk is not as popular a format as news-talk, I would think that taking on the two "KNBRs" would take KTRB farther down into the ratings basement than taking on KGO and the two other talk stations.

If nothing else, Glenn Beck is a nationally known figure, and Neal Boortz has had some visibility the last couple of years.

Anything would be better than the crap-o-rama they have now. Just no Mexican music!

Hispanics don't listen much to AM anyway.

If they didn't air major tune out infomercials and other paid programming interspersed through the day they'd be more successful. Even though Boortz is not as well known in the country than Beck, his ratings have consistently been the highest on the station since the beginning. Enjoy listening to him, not the same conservative, anti-obama drab you get from beck, hannity and the like.

Just about anything would be more successful than what they are doing. In today's monthly, KTRB is #50 12+ (tied), #50 25-54 (tied), #52 35-64 (tied).

KTRB could program an oldies format and get better ratings than this! Or even the best of Don Sherwood and Dr. Don Rose and do even better than with oldies! Not that Dr. Don and Sherwood aren't oldies too. Although Sports just might get them into the real game.

I note that on KTRB's weekday schedule, they don't show anything listed from 9 AM to noon, but that they were running Two Live Stews from Fox Sports Radio in that slot today.

KNBR/1050 (KTCT), which is the supposed Fox Sports Radio affiliate in the Bay Area, doesn't run the program; they're running Jim Rome (rack him) instead, which (and I'm guessing here) means that KTRB can clear the show here.

I hadn't realized that Dan Patrick was now on Fox Sports Radio:

http://msn.foxsports.com/radio

I thought he was being syndicated by Jimmy de Castro's Content Factory. KNBR/1050 is carrying DP from noon to 3 PM on tape delay (which is absolute BS) ... now that would be a nice get for KTRB. I think Dan Patrick does a great show.

Of course, the photo of Dan Patrick on the KNBR website includes an ESPN Radio logo, and he hasn't been on ESPN Radio since (guessing again) probably 2007 or so.

The big change will be not format, but ownership. They are currently in bankruptcy. So there will be a transfer of owners or something to do with the operations of TRB.

But why would they announce that on their website? The average listener could care less about ownership of the stations they listen to.

Hey, RSO, you may have a great format idea here...

New Format, adding the retired Don Klein on sports and KGO's Don Sanchez with news-briefs:

"All Don, All The Time!"

I guess it falls upon me to provide the obvious follow-up remark:

Maybe Clear Channel will sell them the KDON call letters.

It doesn't seem like going from the #5 or so talk station to the #3 sports station would be that big a help to them, but good luck with that!

I think it has less to do with the actual format as to the number and kind of listeners attracted for the amount of money spent on the station. Some stations can survive quite nicely thank you with low ratings and low overhead. If KTRB had high enough sales and low enough overhead to make a profit it wouldn't matter if it were the #50 station in the market (which I believe it is). So, going from the #5 talker to the #3 sports could work just fine if there are sponsors interested in reaching those listeners.

Remember that KDIA and KDYA are profitable but don't show up in the ratings. Well, one of them did for one book, but that was an anomaly. However, I can attest, having visited the studios and met the folks working there, that they're surviving just fine with no ratings to speak of.

From the Northern California Broadcasters Association website (www.ncradio.com):

We are launching a San Francisco based new sports programming station, and will be the new home of the Oakland A’s for starters. There is a unique and substantial opportunity for an experienced radio seller.

The ideal candidate has worked in Bay area radio in sales, has sold sports programming, has contacts to hit the ground running, wants the opportunity to be a star, and wants the opportunity to make a lot of money.

Judging by this scintilating writing style the high standards continue at KTRB.
