Big changes to DFW radio ????

Localism... blah blah blah... independently programmed CC stations... blah blah blah...

Well, they picked one hell of a time to improve their product. I guess after dismantling it piece by piece over the years any improvement can be measured as "significant". It's like a store that has really high prices in order to mark stuff down "on sale".

That first paragraph reads more like a paid advertisement then what's really going to happen. If you read between the lines, Clear Channel is creating its one world network for each format and so called local stations will be lucky if they are local for maybe one daypart daily.

Sounds like local CC stations will be "strongly encouraged" to use syndicated programming wherever possible, if they're not already.

This is the way the (radio) world ends, not with a bang but with a whimper.

One big change would be the DFW market being listenable.

Be thankful for the radio we have here. I've been traveling through Texas over the past couple weeks and let me tell you that radio outside of this market BLOWS!

Since we're talkin about CC. Has anyone heard their active rock station KIOC? Big Dog 106? The play list is good, but the talent is horrible. The mid day guy sounds like a strip club DJ. ::)

I don't really see anything in this story that makes me think anyone is going to flip formats. I think what they are doing is allowing the local managers a bit more latitude about how they program the stations. I agree that it sounds like they're encouraging them to use the company's syndication arm in dayparts that aren't doing well. However, this also means that stations that are doing well won't have to ditch good talent for the sake of the syndication company. We've seen how that works out (KZPS I'm looking right at you)

Were it my company, I'd make some pretty radical changes:
1. Local managers would have local program directors putting together the music lineup for each station. No more of this corporate one-size-fits-all garbage.
2. All local DJ's from 5am - 7pm at least. They would be encouraged to intreact with listeners on the air. (not live, you could tape it for safety) Some stations still do this, but most don't.
3. Local news at top and bottom of each hour, on each station, 24/7. We're talking 2 and 1 minute cut-ins along with a little weather and traffic and a commercial avail.
4. No more than 4 commercial breaks in a hour and no more than 3 minutes of commercials in each break.

I'm pretty sure that localizing the programming and talent along with giving the listener something they can't readily get on sat radio or an ipod will lead to more listeners. I'd also mandate that each station spend a considerable amount of money on TV and billboard advertising each year.

Whatever it is that CC is doing doesn't sound like it's going to be good for radio overall.

Sounds like they are going to put Seacrest coast to coast. So no matter where you are, every CC radio station will be playing the exact same thing. If you are in Dallas, good luck hearing about the Cowboys on the morning show! In Houston, sorry, we're not talking about the latest Astros losing streak. Austin doesn't really need to hear about the Longhorns, do they??

Sorry Man,

That sounds way too much like real radio for the corporate exeudroids to ever buy into it.
