Big D & Bubba leaving WSIX Afternoon Drive

Via WSIX Facebook feed:

98 WSIX
‎(via Big D & Bubba) As some of you know, we have been working 2 jobs since 2003...we do a Nationally Syndicated MORNING show as well as Afternoons on the BIG 98.....After years of working from sun-up to sun-down we've decided to concentrate on our "Day Job".....Our last day here on the BIG 98 will be Tuesday Nov 22nd. In Much more EXCITING news for us, the "Big D & Bubba" show will debut on The American Forces Radio Network, Monday on AFN’s Country station. Pretty crazy that our goofy prank calls & telemarketers will not only be heard coast to coast, but also overseas in 177 countries and all U.S. ships at sea. Being a part of AFN, and knowing that we can bring a little bit of home to our friends and family who are stationed overseas, is possibly the single biggest accomplishment in radio for us. We couldn't be more excited! God Bless YOU for putting up with the two of us all these years.....and of course, GOD BLESS AMERICA. We Love each and every one of you....our 17 listeners ♥ --- d&b

So why don't they move Billy and Karla to afternoons and have Big D and Bubba in the morning as part of their simulcast? I'd rather hear Billy and Karla in the morning though.

So how much of the afternoon show was "live"? I had heard it was, for the most part just the morning show cut to fit afternoons.

That would be the smart thing for WSIX to do. Move Billy and Karla to afternoons and then have "The Big D and Bubba Show" take over morning drive as part of their National simulcast.

No more going to bed before it's dark or crawling out of bed in the middle of the night? Tempting! :)

LOL!! Billy, my wife and I wish you the best in whatever time slot you guys are in!!

This is so sad. They removed Nashville 11 from siriusxm so I lost the ability to listen to the morning show on my way to work and now I'll lose my afternoon fix. :( I'd much rather move Billy and Carla to the afternoon and have WSIX carry the Big D & Bubba morning show. I'm not much of a fan of that but Big D and Bubba keep me laughing. Hopefully WSIX changes the lineup.

Sorry, we're not going anywhere for a while. I hate to ruin your Christmas. Lol

I must say, in an era where radio companies have been notorious for firing local talent and replacing them with syndicated/birdfed programming - and listeners chewing said radio companies out for this practice - this must be the first time I have seen a radio message board thread where more than two people actually advocate hearing the national show over the local one! Have we forgotten who B&K replaced already? And just how big the shoes of the previous WSIX morning show are that B&K are filling? And more importantly, keeping some sort of a traditional local WSIX morning show alive? Sure, B&K are no House Foundation, but you know what: 1. Neither am I; 2. I guarantee that, had WSIX flip-flopped B&K with D&B, not a week would pass without someone pining for the unretirement of Gerry House.

And that... might be the truth.

Here is my totally ignorant and unsolicited opinion: If a show exactly like the House Foundation satisfied the bottom line today like it did, say 15 (or even 10 years) ago, we would either still have the House Foundation completely intact (Gerry, Mike, Duncan, Al) or, if they retired, we would have a show formatted as close to they were as possible in that slot. Of course, that is not how it worked out. Radio has moved on because listeners want something different and the Billy and Karla show reflect those changes. WSIX didn't want another House Foundation or they wouldn't have broke it apart knowing it would force the outcome they got. I think they wanted a show that appeals to a more advertiser friendly demo.

That said, I wish the B&K show wasn't so "confined" (I'm not sure of a better word to use) to the obvious desire of mgmt to pump so much music into each hour so more of their personalities would come through because they do have a good chemistry and seem to be quite a good fit. Of course, it could be worse: the same thing is happening at the River plus they seem to repeat segments. I guess they believe that there are two "sets" of commuters they are going after and most people aren't listening from start to finish but it sure is annoying if you are!

I, and I might be the only one, am thankful that B&K are staying on in the morning. I listened to Gerry for years but I even I was starting to itch for a change. It's not negative - I was just wanting a little something different and the last year that Gerry was on he just seemed frustrated by the whole deal. B&K seem genuinely happy to be there! I enjoyed Big D and Bubba in the afternoons but I still want to hear local personalities and morning drive is a place where it still really counts.

Oddly, I heard Billy earlier this morning on a station in Fairbanks (KIAK) that I was listening to over the internet. The man is everywhere! ;D

I was searching for something on facebook and this came up. I think it sums up the mentality of a majority of the radio listeners today unfortunately (I realize there are only 90 people in the dumb group). (I assume the group was made BEFORE Cumulus decided to put The Bert Show on. Good show, but I think it'd be better to just play music all morning instead. Sorry to digress, but thought it fit in somewhat as we were talking about air talent today.

We hate the radio stations that talk more than they play the music that we want to hear!! We want to hear the music that makes us move, makes us sing a long. We don't want to hear about the DJs day or his thoughts about anything. WE DON'T CARE!! Just play some MUSIC!!

The sad part is they don't really mean that. Radio has strayed so far from the personality dominated days, few air talents know how to get and keep an audience. The truth is, if the AT is doing his/her job correctly they are at least as important as the music. When Lujack wasn't at WLS, I missed him. When Ron Chapman wasn't on at KVIL, I missed him. Good AT's compliment the music, not detract from it. ---Just my $0.02.

Good AT's compliment the music, not detract from it. ABSOLUTELY !!! Other wise all you have is ipods on a big stick..if all they want is music...and no talk..then why are they listening to radio to start with...Stations have dumbed down the audience by going to VT and automation in order to save money...because they overpaid for stations to begin with..now instead to trying to SELL themselves profitable...they are trying desperately to SAVE themselves from losing their corporate butts.......

Wow, you win the prize for cramming four bits of unrelated radio mythology into one sentence. That's a real talent, but not in a good way.

While we're at it, give me the name of one AT who is not an over-55 boomer who understands your concept of a "good AT."

Wow, you win the prize for cramming four bits of unrelated radio mythology into one sentence. Thanks..I'll put it next to my DJ of the year award..if I could remember where I put it.. ;D
