Big Jay Sorensen on this week's Radio Racket

To help us celebrate our 2nd Anniversary, Big Jay is coming on the Radio Racket...but not just on the phone this time. Big Jay is making the trek to suburban Philadelphia to join us in studio!

We know he's popular (for the most part) around here (with a thread now approaching 15-THOUSAND views!) and we hope you get the chance to check out our show this Friday night at 10pm.

Jay has more stories about radio than anyone I've ever talked to, and he loves to tell them! I used to pick his brain when we worked together at WWDB and we'll do it again on the show.

We've been waiting to have Jay in studio for a while now and we're glad the time has arrived.

Hope to see you all on Friday night at 10pm!

... rivaling only the "Dance Music - Okay Philly, You Are Next" thread...

Should be an interesting edition of the Racket this week. Needless to say, it is going to... BE BIG!

I'm unfamiliar with Radio Racket, but I'm quite familiar with Jay, so I will try to listen to you this coming weekend.

By the way, the Radio Racket site states "From Philadelphia...The "program of record...BY radio people, FOR radio people."

Who are the radio people that conduct the show and what is their background in radio?

George Brusstar and Kyle DeWitt have previously worked, either on-air or behind the scenes, at several area radio stations, including WIP/Philadelphia and WILM/Wilmington. Roscoe currently works at a major country station in the area.

For more information on the hosts and the show, you can familiarize yourself with the Racketpedia:
http://www.racketpedia.com

And remember, if you can't listen to the live show this Friday night, the show replays all weekend long.

What did George Brusstar and/or Kyle DeWitt do at WIP? I don't recall ever hearing either of those names on the air at 610 over the past 20 years of its sports-talk format.

Also, where does Roscoe work and what does he do there?

I didn't know this was an inquisition...

I was a producer at WIP for two different stints, 1997-1999 and 2000-2001. I was also a full-time producer at WWDB. I was hired to work with Rollye James, who was then let go, and subsequently produced for Gil Gross and Irv Homer. I was also the Asst. Production Director at the station and was part of the on-air ensemble of the Kent Voss Show.

My on-air work occurred at WAYV, WHTG and WILM. I was full-time at WILM for 3 years doing news anchoring & reporting until I realized that I could no longer afford to live on the wages I was making. So, I got out of the business. I still enjoy the medium and follow it closely, hence why I'm a part of the Racket.

George worked at many stations, including with me at WILM. He worked at WDRE as a board-op and then at lots of stations throughout S. Jersey. I'll let him recall all the call letters. He is also a certified "radio geek" which qualifies him to host the show. If you listen, I'll think you'll agree.

Roscoe has never worked in radio full-time. He currently jocks at WXTU. He's worked part-time at many other stations and various formats from Philly to Rhode Island.

Since I sincerely doubt that you are Harry Kalas, what are your qualifications to post on this forum? Turn-about is fair play...right?

I'm gonna be caffeined-up. This oughta be a hoot.

I can say bad words that I've never said on the radio, right?

Holy-S*&# Batman.

Don't forget to call. I wanna hear from yous guys and gals tonight.

I may have forgotten how to use a mic, but they tell me it's like riding a bike.

BE BIG
Jay Severin.

It's not. I was just curious about the credentials of the people conducting the show. There's no need for you to get defensive or cranky. Sheesh! I hope you never get questioned by the FBI, the IRS, or Kenneth Starr :D

You're right, I'm not Harry Kalas (although when we worked at the same station, his mail would often end up in my mailbox). As far as my qualifications to post on this forum, I didn't realize there was a set of qualifications necessary to be able to post here. I'm under the impression this board is open to anyone who chooses to post (and who, of course, follows the rules and regs of the board moderator). Needing qualifications to post here would be similar to needing qualifications to listen to your internet show. BTW, do you know how many listeners your internet show has?

I had a blast last night on The Radio Racket. Nobody on the program takes themselves too seriously; thus the free-spirit off-the-cuff nature of the content and opinions.

I've been intrigued by this little internet radio show about radio for a couple of years, and had to check it out for myself. Yeah..it comes from a small make-shift studio. Yeah it's format is loose and frankly, sloppy at times, but that makes it fun.

I did make suggestions, but realized...hey..it ain't my show! So I just kept many things to myself. I respect what the guys attempt to do each week...talking about radio, its people, its frustrations, it joys, its setbacks, its successes. I think THAT'S a very healthy thing to do now and then. If only a terrestrail or satellite station would give up a couple of hours a week for that kind of chatter.

I am not sure if it has MASS appeal to the people who just want to hear a jukebox, or political pontifcation on talk radio...but I sensed there are enough radio geeks to tune in just for a hoot. The phones were lit the entire show with folks wanting to chime in on issues. Ya know, there were times in '97 at WPHT when the phones didn't even RING, so The Radio Racket at least has someone with a pulse plugged in.

All in all a fun time. Thanks to George, Kyle and Roscoe for the red-carpet treatment. After the couple of years I've had, it was a nice boost for me.

Oh..and thanks to the callers...especially Famous Amos...I didn't follow what you were talking about half the time, but what else is new. You are a true friend and I appreciate you calling and your great ability for story-telling. I'm sure my favorite female personality on the planet will enjoy the program when she finally awakens from her golden slumber.

And I was able to say bad words on the air...that was liberating...but I hesitated at first due to my 38 years of having to watch almost every word.

Kyle, this is a board where people are allowed to have their own opinions. Whether its to nit-pik or just speak whats on their mind. Sometimes you come off as a know it all and if people disagree with you, they shouldnt be allowed on this board. If someones says that you said something, which you didnt, they are wrong. But let them speak their mind. Just reading your comments, It did seem that you had a big job at WIP and WWDB. But you were just a producer, which is a glorified name for a board op. It really doesnt take any real talent to be a board op. Your on air work is differant. Not everyone can be on the air, so I do give you credit for that. So just because you have your Radio Racket show, doesnt mean everything you say or your guests say is gospel, or has to be agreed with. There are people on this board who know more than you, and some who know less. But it doesnt matter who you are. As long as the information is correct and within the guidelines they should be ok.

The most important thing between the on air talent and the transmitter is the board-op. The board-op is the producer. The board-op is the person that makes it happen. As in bringing all critical elements together. With out the right board op, the most well prepped show isn’t even quite electric. Ya feel me? Unless you’re just reading cards, or generally being an idiot.

I did not enjoy your comment about the double amputee. It was unprofessional, thoughtless, tasteless, and very hurtful.

I guess that would make Big Jay unprofessional, thoughtless, tasteless and very hurtful as well since he almost fell off of his chair laughing when I said it.

Go listen to something else. In the words of Brusstar, "I don't care."

Good luck with the prosthetic legs.

Now Boys...

The line was tasteless, and a bit over the top...I agree. I laughed more because of the shock that someone would SAY it.

And yet, this IS the internet. It ain't the flagship station of the Columbia Broadcasting System. So while many people might be offended by the comment...it was HIS opinion...and HE has to answer to the critique that you are giving...Harry included. I was just as suprised as anyone to hear that comment...

Does that make ME bad because I laughed? I dunno. I was just going with the flow...but ya know folks, isn't talk radio supposed to get REACTION? Yes..
And then the reaction TO the reaction should be taken with the spirit with which it was given. The guy (Harry) was offended...and just accept that he was, as were others, and try not to do it again. Simple. We all have said things on the air that we wish we hadn't...but I usually BLEEP them, because I am to protect the license of the operators.

Let's all just call a truce here, and leave it be. Kyle..you don't have to be so reactionary and Harry was just pointing something out..and he's correct about something...NUANCES are UNDETECTED when things are TYPED. He was just giving his opinion...and his original stuff about WHO ARE YOU were valid questions. I think Kyle gave some valid answers but got defensive. So let's just call it a day.

I had fun. Was it perfect? No. Nobody is. Yeah..even me.

I wish we had talked more about TODAY rather than people asking questions about reverb on 101.5...but that's live radio.. With no screening, ya don't know what they're gonna say. So it was ALL off the cuff..and it's THEIR show and they seem to like doing it that way. I would do it differently, but it ain't mine to make that decision.

I think the audience had a good time, at least from where I sat.

Thanks for those who DID call and make comments. I especially liked the "BLIND" chick who didn't know who I was. That's common, and very cool. I think many people didn't know who I was until last night on THAT show. I have fans in many places, but unless you're Howard or Rush, most people don't KNOW people on the radio anymore.

Wow...a talk show without phony bombast or self-importance. Who'da thunk it... ;D

Yes Sam, there is!

I'll get back to you with the details. My sources don't quite have it nailed down yet, but it will be either, WIP, WPHT, WOGL, WYSP, or KYW involved.

Now that cooler heads prevail...let me sum up what happened with the Radio Racket thread being moved to OUTSIDE do duke it out.

Harry the K was just ASKING of the credentials of the parties involved. Kyle got a little taken aback that anyone would dare ask. Both are "radio" vets. Both know that there are many types of jobs within the broadcast umbrella.

What I think happened was TYPED snide remarks were taken a bit too literally, and thus the uproar. I know both gentlemen, and I would dare say that Harry had every right to ask...and Kyle had every right to answer. I just wish that the written word would convey the little nuances that can only be obtained by body language, subtle facial expressions, and perhaps better explaining WHY it was so necessary to get the questions and responses out there. Harry was looking after ME I believe, as we go wayyyyy back together. Kyle and I go back about 8 years at DB where he was a producer/board op at the time. BOTH have have successes elsewhere in the biz.

I would hope that this ends this voyage into misunderstandingville.

From the email that I'm getting, several radio types tuned in on Frijay night and heard at least part of the show. They said it was entertaining, and they gained some new insight on may fronts. THAT'S why I did the show.

I will be joining another Internet-Only show for one night...Dave The Rave's Saturday night program featuring rare oldies and familiar hits. If you're lucky, I may do some Record Pig Trivia. I'll let y'all know when I'l be on. It'll bring me back to my roots of being a DJ...as you know I go both ways....talk & tunes.
