BIG JIM MARTIN

Am most saddened to report the passing of a dear friend, Big Jim Martin.

Jim loved overnights -- did the shift admirably for many many years in this market (often while doing other jobs during daylight). He overcame some demons a few decades ago, and went on to become a role model that many of us aspired to mimic -- even just a little.

An amazing sense of humor ... one of the best radio practical joke minds ever. A voice to die for -- and a guy we loved to work WITH.

Not even 24 hours in heaven and I know he's already dishing out some serious shit to Jerry Kaye -- but not to worry cuz Jerry can (and will) dish it back.

Very saddened to hear this. He was so friendly and polite to a young jock coming in to work with him. I know he had some issues, but that is life, and he always gave it his best. "Big Jim", wasn't all that big physically, but very big as a strong communicator, and very big as a person. When I look back on my career, I will always remember "Big". RIP.

Sidebar: I came in to follow Big Jim one night in November of 1980, and he was the one who told me Reagan had beaten Carter officially, and that Sen. Magnuson had been defeated by republican Slade Gorton. Quite a night, but Big was all over it!

i worked for about a year at KVI-AM between 1988-'89, live board oping, Humble Harves evening show, and Big Jim was doing overnights there at that time and would follow me into the tiny cramped studio, and was always funny and freiendly to a guy who wasn't even a "real" jock, to me he WAS bigger than life, so sorry to hear of his passing. working overnights for God now i guess

Where did Jim go after he left KVI? I seem to remember him being a movie buff. At least he knew a lot about them on air.

I could be mistaken, but KVI may have been Big's last stop. As I understand it, he really didn't have to work much after that.

If anyone wants info on the family event (lakeside on Lake Washington, no less!) this coming Sunday (8/29) for Jim...please Private message me and I'll send you directions. Hopefully most folks who are interested have already been e-mailed.
