Big John Wetherbee gone from CC Atlanta?

It looks like Big John Wetherbee is no longer at CC Atlanta. Weather is now being done by WGCL CBS 46, where Mr. Wetherbee was Chief Meterologist before Gene Norman's arrival (Mr. Wetherbee left WGCL last year). He also was PD at Cool 105.7, and midday host at Fox 97 for several years while working on his broadcast meterology certificate from Mississippi State University. He briefly hosted the morning show at then Peach 94.9 right before the station became Lite.

I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Wetherbee on two occasions. Once via telephone in 1999 when I interviewed him for a school project, and again in 2004 in-person when he was at the Cool concert in Acworth.

Even without gigs at Lite and CBS 46, he still has his hands full. He runs a full-time service that provides weather forecasts to radio stations nationwide (including Rome's South 107).

I wish him the best of luck, and may God continue to bless him and his family.

If you ever met or worked with this guy...you'll know he is truly one of the few gentlemen left in Radio as we know it today. He is a truly a nice person and consumate professional.

Mike Wheeler just told me Wetherbee is now the OM in Clear Channel Savannah.

Wouldn't it make more sense to keep Wetherbee in Atlanta and send that imbecile Wheeler to Savannah?

Or better yet to Arby's alongside Del Core?

From what I've heard, Big John is happy with his new post in Savannah. He is one of the nice guys in radio, and there are precious few like him left in this business.

Yeah, he is. Worked with him a short stint when I was at WGNX-TV from July-December in '99. I hated what Meredith Broadcasting did to him. We talked shop a bit. Wish I got to know him more, he could get me a job! ;)

Yes, he is a very nice guy. It's a shame that our local TV will hire kids and call them "meterologists" when they aren't, and a guy who is the real thing has trouble getting on the air. The state of radio is bad enough, but kids who can barely speak English get TV reporter jobs nowadays...oh well, this business is all going to the dogs.

May I just tell all of you what a genuine PLEASURE it is to see a thread with only positive comments!

Thank you...

Hodgie2005,
What do you do at Clear Channel Savannah? Are you a D.J. I have known Big John Wetherbee for about 16 years now. It has been ever since I was in third grade. I hope you enjoy working for him. Tell Jon I said hello.

John Wetherbee is an awesome guy! Anyone who works with him is extremely lucky, he is a genuinely nice guy!

This is a San Antonio Radio Station (that is about to Flip in 3 days)

Plus he is also a Weatherman for WTOC TV 11 in Savannah.

Big John voice-tracks shows for a couple of CC stations around the country. San Antonio and Phenoix are a couple of markets he voice tracks for, and does fairly well... in addition to his weather service being offered through United Stations, his weekend gig in Savannah and his duties with CC Savannah, John seems to keeps fairly busy. As many who have worked with him, myself included, John is a class act and one of the hardest workers in broadcasting.

I talked to and almost went to work for John on several occasions during his time at FOX 97. Truly a pro-consistent on the air in any capacity and a genuine nice guy. He's been around the block a few times-WNAP in INDY, CHICAGO, you name it. A class act who encouraged me when I was looking to move up, always took or returned my calls and treated me with respect.

I worked with John when he first came to Atlanta as Ops' manager/PD at WALR-FM 104.7. He is a good guy. It was a hell of a way to start with the tower falling a week before going on the air. He got into weather stuff after we worked together. I think he did it as a correspondence course while he was jocking at Fox. I think his first TV weather gig was up in Chattanooga, could be wrong about that.
