Big John

I just read in The Star that Big John Gillis is leaving WIBC. Says he's had enough.

Any more inside news on this?

Hadn't he been doing some of the reports from home for years? It doesn't really matter where you are as long as you have the info. That seems to be a fairly common thing for weather people to do as well.

Love the guy, but he needed to retire. His traffic reports were long-winded, sometimes wrong and sometimes either told bad jokes or stories of his vacations. Then again, I'm a believer of the traffic person giving me the important info clear, concise and under a minute. I don't think he's been "phoning it in" because since he started doing his "Big John at large" stuff for Indianapolis Today live at noon, he's stayed inside the studios.

Where's the Commander? Paging Rich McDonald.

LOL i was thinking about the Commander today when Smiley was doing his 80's day on his decade week just to add a touch of classic traffic for WZPL this morning especially since Regular ZPL traffic Reporter Mindy Winkler was off today

I thought Mindy's fill-in on Wednesday morning did a fine job.

...but maybe I'm biased.

Having worked in Marion mornings, Paul Poteet would call in and do forecasts (he still does there, by-the-by) from the WRTV studios. However, there were days he'd take off from morning news and still call in the forcasts from his house, which was added value really. We'd turn into a bit sometimes and play off that. Great to play off on and come up with liners of his own, too...which is why he phones into Smiley, too. ;)

About Big John, I'm sorry to hear about his departure. Although I wish him well in the future endeavors he takes up. I liked his "Big John At-Large" bits. They were a bit of fun and informative, too. If he goes forth with a TV project, I think it should borrow some of "At-Large's" fun.

S'ok...I didn't really take it personally...I was just giving you a poke.

The Commander probably would have done better than I did anyway.
