Big moves

Wow, what a weekend to be out of town... NYC and Chicago get JACK-FM, Variety Hits comes to Chattanooga, and the format looks to be the biggest newcomer since for sure Rhythmic Oldies, and perhaps even the biggest since Hot AC.

The upside: 96.3 JACK-FM (WCJK) in Nashville is a great station. I've talked with several people (family/friends) about it, and invariably the response I've heard has been positive. Just now my brother and I gave one of those "wow!" reactions hearing a Stereo MCs song on WCJK, which I haven't heard on the radio in maybe 8 years.

Add into that the Montreal "Mike FM" drive-time attempt (complete with the biggest logo ripoff I've seen in some time), and things are really picking up.

In the U.S., the only top ten markets left without a Variety Hits format are Houston (#7) and Washington, DC (#8).
______________

Then it's time to start speculating... I can't tell you about "H-Town", but I wouldn't be surprised if WARW went Jack before the Fourth of July, if not this Friday...
______________

Hence the problem with Rhythmics. They don't play enough gold and beat on the same 60 songs per day - even in their daytime mix shows. Stereo MCs should still be in a gold and spun a few times a month. From Connected to Step It Up to Elevate My Mind. They'd still fit in a Rhythmic. I find many alternative stations still playing them. Neneh Cherry, Bell Biv Devoe, Cece Penniston, Wreckx, Paperboy, N2Deep, K7, my God, the list of hits that fit as golds that should be in rotation on Rhythmics is endless. But they keep on doing what they're doing and the perception people have is a reality. This is how Jack was born. As far as Jack's 80s hits? Well naturally no one's heard them in a bit, there's hardly any 80s stations to play all the hits. 80s DANCE, 80s POP not just 80s ROCK.

The entire justification for this format is based on radio's own doing.

Re: Jack-Watch: Houston and Washington

Here in Houston, Infinity's country KILT and smooth jazz KHJZ are doing well in the ratings, so there's no threat of "jacking" 'em. Then again, WCBS and WJMK were doing ok, so anything seems possible.

Our oldies station, KLDE, is owned by Cox, which seems to have left it and their other 3 stations in the cluster on autopilot and forgot about them.

When they do dig out a song like that, it gets played a lot. I only listen to WCJK maybe 30 minutes a day since they signed on. I've heard that Stereo MC song (Connected) at least 3 times. Not a complaint, just an observation.

Washington has it at Mix 107.3.... so I guess it's just down to Houston which coincidently is the only top 10 market with an '80s station (I think).

I have yet to hear it on WCBS-FM this weekend...

Are you sure? I thought that was just a one-time stunt with Jack Diamond?
______________

Much like sister WPLJ, WRQX has stretched its playlist signficantly. They have also reimaged a bit more in the vein of a Variety Hits station, but are still in the threshold of Hot AC as well.

There are 16 currents/recurrents getting between 16-19 spins a week.
