Big News from Clear Channel

Well, Clear Channel will continue to off load small market, less profitable stations--so that could mean that one big group or several small groups may be buying stations in your area.

yep...here's the list of IA stations on the block:

Sioux City, IA — Market 395
Mason City, IA — Market 372
Burlington, IA — Market 197
Fort Dodge, IA — Market 200

From the announcement:

Today the company announced that we will be going private and details on that were in an earlier e-mail from Mark Mays. Additional details will be forthcoming as will the opportunity for you to hear about this from Mark and Randall via a teleconference later today.

Additionally, we are announcing the intention to sell Clear Channel Television and 448 of our radio stations in 90 markets, all of which are outside of the top 100 markets. The attached list details all markets we intend to sell. Your market and stations are NOT intended for sale.

Please understand, the markets we are selling are valuable, well run properties and the efforts of the staff and management at those stations are greatly appreciated. They do not fit into the strategic plan for Clear Channel Radio and we believe are much better served operating under different ownership.

So ends the rumors...

I wouldn't be surprised to see them sell off their Iowa properties as a whole in 1 package deal, if the right amount of a bid is offered.

OK, According to this DM Register article WHO & WOC are part of the sale???

Is this incorrect???

No, the article would be correct. I read the article. The Des Moines and Quad City markets would be part of the sale to the investor group. The others in the state would be sold, but to other operators.

Basically what's happening is Clear Channel is selling all of their stations to this investment group. In turn, the investment group will keep their Des Moines and Quad City stations, but sell the other stations in the state.

So the fact that they are not selling off the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City groupd would seem to imply that this group is somewhat profitable. Based on the chatter I've seen here the past couple years and the ratings I've seen (12+ which really don't tell too much of the story) I wouldn't have guessed this.

Do you think it's possible that the new owners would change things in Des Moines? ???

This unbelievable news! CC finally falls to the all mighty dollar ;D

Now if Saga can fall flat on it's face, I'd host a major celebration at my place! Food and beverages on me for EVERYONE!!

You people who are constantly hoping to see the "big corporate radio owners" falter make me laugh. You are probably the same ones who shop at Wal-Mart, buy your clothes at the local mall, and eat once a week (if not more) at McDonalds. Unless you are staying away from EVERYTHING corporate you have ABSOLUTELY NO VALIDITY IN YOUR ARGUMENTS! Look around your house. Look at the appliances you own, look at the car you drive, look at the toys your kids play with, look at the computer you are reading this on. EVERYTHING is massed produced by a corporation. You say that corporate radio is "cookie cutter". Yes, to an extent, SOME of it is. The "talent" is what keeps it fresh. The promotions are what keep it fresh. Everyone who is in the business is in it to make money. EVERYONE. If you aren't in it to make money, you are LYING. If you still believe you aren't in it to make money, go to your boss RIGHT NOW and tell him or her you want to work FOR FREE. We are all part of SOME corporation. Unless you are the owner of a radio station, or any business for that matter, SOMEONE above you is making more money and making more decisions.

Now, take another sip of your Starbucks and a drag off of your Marlboro, get up from your Dell and go tell your boss your last paycheck was your final one. The hypocrisy makes me puke.

The Stick

This may be a sign of the Apocalypse, but I wholeheartedly agree with what Stickman said.

Corporate radio has failed in many of the smaller markets because of weak (poor) management, lousy promotions and unmotivated talent. The rest of us, myself included, need to stop focusing on the negative...capitalize on the positives and the resources we have to work with...and focus on the job at hand -- GENERATING MORE REVENUE! That's how you get ahead.

Thus endeth the lesson. ::)

ALO knows it...and I suspect everyone else on here knows it, but is too afraid to admit it! Thanks for the "props" ALO. The rest will come around shortly.

Thus sayeth The Stick.

I hope you were'nt referring to me, I could care less if corportate radio faulters or succeeds. Unlike some, I tend to root for the little guy, which is a rarity anymore.

The fat pigs in San Antonio, Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, and Las Vegas could give a flying hoot about Des Moines radio or it's listeners. It's all about $$$$$$

CC went private, and Des Moines radio continues to suck whoopty freaking doo 8).

Not a big fan of corporate radio because of how they treat their people. My biggest concern about the latest CC news is the loss of jobs from our brothers & sisters in radio. I've been seeing CC stations in various parts of the country start passing out pink slips right before the holidays. Some stinks about that!!! :(
