Big OKC Sports Radio Changes

Lots of Twitter chatter KRXO will switch formats to sports talk.

Were these people forced out b/c of Cumulus or is Tyler Media making a huge play?

Tyler Media is making a huge miscalculation. Flipping KRXO to sports talk is...unbelievable. Doing it by hiring practically an entire staff from a competitor is slimy as hell (and I certainly have no love for Cumulus). More of Tyler being Tyler - he has no clue and is a mere shadow of his father.

Next from Tyler: Let's screw up Magic 104 and KOMA, which he's already done to an extent.

God I miss radio from the 60's & 70's.

  • Steely gone from WWLS; going to Tyler Media. Rumors he's not the only one
  • Tyler Media flipping one of its signals to sports; possibly KRXO

I heard Traber is one of them.

Traber and Mark Rodgers are indeed moving to the new sports station and KRXO moving to 104.5.

It will be nice if someday somebody decides to try something in OKC other than classic rock or sports talk. Are those the only two formats that work in this market?

I would say I hope this forces 105.3 to flip but I think Cumulus has an agreement they have to have a CBS sports station in all of their markets so its probably not changing.

How many sports stations does OKC need?

Definitely less than the 7 or 8 OKC will now have, depending on how one counts. Overkill to be sure....but that's how radio is these days.

It seems like FM radio is slowly becoming what AM radio used to be. Mostly talk and music aimed at older generations. I guess its because everybody is now listening to Pandora, which sucks if you don't have unlimited data.

When it comes to sports talk, it sells. You don't even need numbers to sell it. Just having OU sports and the NFL should make the new station a license to print money because advertisers will come flocking to the station. Plus, Tyler can probably make anyone who wants a prime spot during Sooners' or football buy a full schedule for the entire year.

105.3 is in trust and not covered by the agreement between Cumulus and CBS. FCC rules require trustees to operate their stations separately from the main companies, and trustees are required to pay for and carefully document any payment for any service they receive from the main company. Of course, the trustee has to keep his bosses happy because his job is to sell the station for the highest price he can get. He also has to squeeze as much money as possible out of the stations because the profits of the station, both in day-to-day operation and in the eventual sale, are usually a big part of his compensation, though every trust agreement I've seen reimburses the trustee for any losses sustained and guarantees a minimum management fee.

So far it's just 1 person they've picked off. Not slimy at all. Shrewd move that puts a well-respected and listened to voice on a new station. If they're paying Steely more than Cumulus did, why not?

I will miss picking up KRXO in Tulsa. No way that is going to happen now with the small translator, shame. i enjoyed KRXO.

I just found out about KRXO flipping to Sports, that was a shocker right there. I haven't been that shocked since KAEZ flipped format on that frequency in the mid 80's.

It should been in such a way where KBRU should still be Alternative as KHBZ while KRXO should still be Classic Rock. Oh well, things change, so we have KBRU playing 80s and 90s rock which resembles a Gen-X format like KTGX is at a time in Tulsa.

I thought maybe Tyler should flip KRXO to Alternative instead of Sports and Clear Channel should shift KBRU to 70s and 80s Classic Rock.

KQOB should really focus on an Adult Hits format instead of a Classic Rock format like KBEZ in Tulsa, KJKK in Dallas, WJGO in Ft. Myers, FL, or KCBS in LA since "Bob FM" is pretty much an Adult Hits branding in the first place.

I expected one of the classic rockers would flip being that OKC has way too many. I didn't expect them to flip to the one format that OKC is even more saturated with than classic rock.  I hope it doesn't last because there are so many format holes on the dial in OKC, but being that sports stations are low cost and high profit no matter the ratings it probably will.

It's just another sign of the times and of what FM radio is becoming.

Huh?

KRXO is flipping because they are horrible in the ratings. It's hard to fix something that is so watered down and broken. KRXO brought classic rock to OKC, but they are far from where they were 20 years ago. They have nothing that makes them stand apart from Bob or The Brew. Sports, as someone else mentioned, is easy money. Tyler knows that. Flipping to Alternative would be going from bad to worse. That format doesn't really even exist anymore, and it is certainly not a money maker.

And flipping Bob to adult hits because that's the format other "Bob"-branded stations use? That makes zero sense. With KRXO flipping, Bob stands to gain their audience (especially those out of the metro who won't be able to pick up 104.5)...flipping now would be a horrible idea.

It could be worse...they could've flipped it to KOKC-FM.
