Big plans for K LOVE in Albuquerque & Santa Fe

Educational Media Foundation has made a deal with Santa Fe's 90.7 KCFR to swap recently purchased 101.1 KSFQ with them so EMF can possibly get a great Albuquerque-Santa Fe signal for Christian AC "K-LOVE." 90.7 recently applied for a major upgrade from its current class A to class C with a signal similar to the other big class C's serving Albuquerque-Santa Fe. EMF and KCFR recently agreed to a deal that would move 90.7 Belen to 91.1 and further south to allow the 90.7 Santa Fe upgrade. Now that EMF owns both 90.7's the necessary changes should even be more likely. I didn't see any other stations that need to modify to make this happen.
KLOVE has a great signal coming to Albuquerque-Santa Fe.

Good job, Rick! The FCC documents were an interesting read. One has to think EMF approached KSFR with this deal after getting its hands on KSFQ. It's really a win/win situation both parties as EMF will get a Sandia Peak transmitter, and KSFR gets a better stick it wouldn't otherwise be able to get with EMF's KQRI standing in the way.

By the way, there is one other move involved as KVLK 89.5 will move from Socorro to Milan.

KSFR (S.F. Public Radio) is now simulcasting on 90.7 and 101.1 for the move, promoting that the 101.1 frequency will give them a signal from Taos to Albuquerque. The reception on 101.1 is spotty at best in Abq given the distance from the White Rock transmitter and with KKRG next door on 101.3 in Abq. If EMF gets to move from 90.7 to 91.1, I wonder how that will affect the 10 w. Paulino Bernal Evangelism translator on 91.1. 90.7 currently has Air One Programming from the EMF signal licensed to Belen and K-Love already blasts out on 105.5 from the Bosque Farms license. It will be interesting to see what settles. A good signal from KSFR into Abq would be great. I think they do an excellent job at public radio.

When I was visiting Albuquerque a couple years ago, KSFQ put a good signal north of downtown Albuquerque on a car radio. Granted, it wasn't a good enough signal to make marketing to Albuquerque feasible, but it was good enough that someone who enjoyed the station could listen to it on a good radio. Since there's a translator at 95.9 that KBAC hasn't been able to use since KBNM-LP got its Albuquerque translator, maybe there's a way KSFR can be heard in Albuquerque?

I also wonder about Bernal's translator. My gut tells me it will remain since 91.1 Belen will only put a 60 dBu signal over about 75% of the city, which should make its protected contour end south of Albuquerque. I'm also not sure that the application won't have some issues since KQRI will be 7 kw at class A, which normally has a maximum of 6 kw (though it also looks fully-spaced as a C3 to KSFR/KFLQ). I would also expect Air 1 to move to 105.5 with the two 90.7's airing K-Love if this upgrade happens. However, time will tell.

At least this upgrade should put an end to that translator on 90.5 that covers an area virtually entirely covered by 105.5 and airing programming from KLOV despite being able to pick up 105.5 at the transmitter site!

By the way, I agree with you that KSFR is an excellent example of public radio. In fact, public radio is done very well in almost all of New Mexico.
