Big Ron's Memorial Service

Thank you to the folks from WOGL for a touching memorial service to Big Ron O'Brien today. Wonderful remembrences from Ross Brittain, Bob Kelly, Harvey Holliday, Valerie Knight & Jim Loftus. So many great stories. Days like today you realize radio truly is a family. "No man is alone who has friends". Big Ron had many.

Certainly a sad, yet remarkably uplifting day. Ron was "the JOCKS jock. When he hit a post (which was every time) he raised his arms according to one tale today.

Let's all raise our arms and all hit a post for Big Ron the next time we slam one.

Be BIG!

Unless Big Ron dropped what he had consistently done for 30 years, the raising his arms is an Urban Legend...

Typically, you would see Big Ron bobbing his head to the music on a fading song (like a huge Bobble-head doll), which would stop when he started talking (and could start up again briefly if he did a long pause). Unlike some others who will do a big "wow, I just hit the vocal" thing, the modest Mr. O'Brien really did nothing upon hitting the vocal, other than closing the mike..But, nothing to stop those listening to an aircheck of Big Ron from do a hands up when he hits the vocal...

Was it just a problem on my end, or did the webcast sometimes have a problem with the audio not being to keep up with the video stream? (my audio dropped out quite often on a few speakers)

Actually, I HAVE seen some video (on one of the many tributes that have popped up online) and I did notice that while on most of those shots he didn't "raise his arms" as one person indicated at his memorial service in Bala Cynwyd on Friday, he DID make some arm movements to indicate that he "hit the post" on some clips I saw.

I think this is nitpicking just a tad. Perhaps it WAS and "urban myth" about his "wave" if you will..(check Snopes.com) but even if it isn't quite the reality that was claimed, the IMAGE of that gave the overflow crowd at the service a chuckle.

In fact, many wonderful things were said at the official service. The fun was AFTER, when stories that weren't appropriate in THAT room were told. Funny all around, and it showed that Ron had a HUGE sense of fun and adventure. So if I was incorrect about the "arm-fling-thing", I stand corrected. When everyone in the room including his mom was smiling and occasionally laughing, you know that this man left quite an impact on his colleagues (some who travelled wide and far to attend) and those who worked with him in the Quaker City.

And if folks want to BELIEVE that he did the arm wave, then let it be! Remember, radio is theater of the mind. We need MORE of that these days. Ya can't have the theater if there ain't no one in the seats. And without PERSONALITIES like Ron and a handful of others still allowed to have the freedom to actually entertain, radio will become a jukebox like most satellite and internet channels. Or they will go the way of AM and become TALK stations. But ya still need PERSONALITIES to be on those too!

Ron could have done TALK or SPORTS too. Talent like that doesn't come along that often these days, because not many companies allow those attributes to grow! What a shame.

Again.. RIP Big Ron.
BE BIG

It is not an urban legend....Detroit, 1971, Radio 1130 WCAR, PM Drive, Big Ron O'Brien.....song is fading or nearing the end, Big Ron's left index finger and matching opposable thumb are on the mic's toggle switch, his right shoulder is moving up and down, his head is bobbing like a prize fighter about to throw his sunday punch and then BOOM, "W C A R... what's goin' on?..brotha' Marvin Gaye...4:40 with Big Ron O'Brien...here's John Denver on 1130 WCAR!" Post, Bammo, Nailed It! His right arm shot straight to the ceiling. I was standing right there in the studio. I didn't even realize we were the same age. Ron was just absolutely magnificant to watch and even more fun to listen to. My warmest and most heartfelt regards to the Philadelphia Market.
