Big Sale at Belk's?

It's been so quiet around here, I thought there must be a big sale at Belks, or Whataburger is having that 2 for 1 special again...........

Not a sale at Belk's, Doug...everybody is scrambling to preserve the TFN and short order business, This is the worst mental attitude I have seen in my 51 years in the business...AND, I mean the attitude is responsible for a great part of the downturn in our area...people are scared it will get worse, employess are afraid for their jobs! If everyone would "go the extra mile" at whatever they do, I think things would improve dramatically. The day of "Not in my job description" is gone!
I quote" The only thing we have to fear is fear itself!" Franklin Roosevelt. Finis...

Maybe we'll shake ourself of Fear Channel and their clones through all of this. At least that's the only positive thing that can come from it. It's sure a shame so many operators are in such bad shape they can't take a little economic hit and pull through without cutting a ton of muscle out of their companies. If employees can survive through the chapter 7s there will be a light at the end of the tunnel IMHO.

Tonight...there are no election returns...no severe thunderstorm coverage...and no mention of Mayor Melton in critical condition in the hospital on any of the 6 Clear Channel stations. I called the phone numbers for each station and let them ring for a full two minutes each. Nobody there! When is congress going to step and and force the FCC to put a stop to this. I bet we have CC national programming soon. They'll probably have some jerk answer phones from San Antonio to try to get past any new FCC rules.
Don't count on Clear Channel is the weather's bad. They really suck.

I don't know where the five day weeks and the "that's not my job" attitude came from. Some us remember six days a week was the norm...yes, even for the morning guy. We all had production, engineering, sales support, copy writing, remotes...lot's of other duties in addition to our shows. (And they were shows...not shifts).

All I can say is "Amen"...all the best to you all...North Mississippi had a rough
time last night...the lightning and wind had all three of our stations off at 5 AM....
We would have had generators if affordable, but all the standbys were off too!
We will prevail...if the old man survives! Cheers>>>JBI

JBoyd..re:generators
Some stations still have their generators handed out during the Conelrad days.
Remember 640 and 1240...marked on radio dials? (Remember dials?)
The selected Conelrad stations...before EBS and EANS...got generators and a
nifty fallout shelter for their transmitters. The building was also furnished
with geiger counters...and a supply of water and canned food.
For those who don't remember Conelrad...the idea was that all stations would go off the air
except selected stations that would switch to either 640khz (kc back then) or 1240khz.
The reason..so enemy bombers could not get a fix on a local radio station and fly
to their targets.
See...I am old.

Well at least people could tune in to WTVA for weather updates during the morn…

…oh wait, they couldn't be bothered to interrupt the morning national news show. Although I will admit that I was pleased to see WABG's marionette of a weather guy on talking about the storms moving through Panola and Yalobusha counties.

Sorry that the bad weather took the stations off, hope you guys didn't get any significant damage or flooding up there!

OLD GM: I know of only one shelter still existing: WGRM, Greenwood.
I remember the last nationwide conlerad test in the early sixties...I tuned in 640 and 1240 and heard the test material...BUT...many other AM's were blasting country, rock, etc., apparently oblivious to what was happening...
that marked the beginning of the end for Conelrad...JBI

I was told that WJDX still has "shelter" transmitter and generator buildings.
I used to have one of the geiger counters "borowed" from an Conelrad station when I was in
Tulsa...back in my crazy DJ days.

We are really upset in Terry!

Belk's has announced that its store in Jackson will be closing later this summer.

My 94-year-old mother says that she always felt that whenever she decided that she wanted something, she could leave immedaiately to drive to the McRae's (now Belk's). She says that she is sick over this loss, and that we really need Dot Lambert these days.

That's a shame to hear that. My mother likes Belk and has been to the one in Jackson a time or two but mostly did her shopping at the ones in Birmingham. I believe they're one of the last family-owned department stores. So the department store business is a lot like radio - it seems only the mom-n-pops do well these days!

And we actually LOVED doing it. Those were the days I miss so much.
