BIG TEN FOOTBALL ON broadcast tv-2007 and beyond!

Besides baseball another important tv contract is also up for grabs.Big Ten Football. The big major market conference's tv contract is up after this season.

ABC is the current over the air carrier of the games and ESPN of course is the cable carrier.

ESPN is pretty much a sure bet to retain cable rights to the games but over the air rights i have read are up for grabs.

FOX is rumored to be very much interested in the rights and NBC might also be interested in them too.

FOX could use the games as a season long buildup for the BCS while if NBC outbid ABC for the over the air rights it would have a full regular season cfb schedule along with Notre Dame games plus the NFL sunday night games and be a ratings winner.

If ABC loses the big ten games to FOX or NBC and doesnt get baseball it will pretty much mark the end of abc as a major player in the sports game.

Personally, I would love for FOX (preferably) or NBC to obtain the rights. As a Michigan fan living in Dallas I am dieing to see something other than the Longhorns and Sooners.

I think the Big Ten is looking to emulate the SEC tv package:Having all their over the air games shown nationally something ABC in its present format of presenting cfb couldnt do to other conference commitments.

I would think FOX has the inside track to a deal if ABC decides not to renew but im sure NBC would be quite interested too in getting a full regular season package of college games to go with the NFL Sunday night package.NBC wants to rebuild its sports division but not as a loss leader.

BTW im NOT in television or radio by any means just am a big tv fanatic and I love reading about the behind the scenes aspect of tv and radio.

Well, doesn't that still leave ABC with the ACC and Pac-10 games?

And what the heck will its affiliates do with all that empty air time on the weekends? The ABC stations I'm familiar with don't seem to have much in terms of rights to movies or syndie shows..

Yes, not to mention the Big-12 & occasional Big East contests assuming ESPN renews/renewed that deal.

And the Big 12....don't forget that.

I believe the Big Ten wants to have its over the air games nationally broadcast cause of the major markets it represents, plus its one of the premier conferences in the land.

If ABC loses the big ten to nbc or fox it wouldnt put abc out of the cfb biz by any means since it will still have the ACC Big 12 and Pac 10 rights and would continue to show 4 or 5 games a year from the Big East conference and maybe 3 or 4 other games from the WAC and maybe MAC but abc cfb would be dealt a severe blow without big ten rights and further downgrade ABC Sports.

ABC probably wouldnt show as many dh's and have some open early time slots(old noon time big ten game slots)for local stations to air INFOMERCIALS etc.

Plus the planned saturday night game would take a severe hit.

Why would NBC want the Big 10?

I could see FOX maybe and besides in the dog eat dog world of college football,

I think it's time that the Big 10 should do what the SEC and ACC did with the

now defunct Jefferson Pilot Sports, Form a syndicate.

They proabaly are seeing that ABC is becoming Lifetime, JR. and want to be

with a network that is starting to care about sports again (NBC or FOX)

Where's CBS in this equation?

They already have one: ESPN Plus.

WXYZ in Detroit (among other stations) often pre-empts the early ABC game (especially if it's not from the Big Ten) to show an ESPN+ game.

Not to mention the Big 12, Mountain West, Conference USA and a few other small conferences as well?

Seems to me that ABC could afford to lose at least ONE major conference IMO.

BTW...I believe FOX (via FSN Northwest & FSN West) has the cable rights to the PAC 10 since that's about all I get on FCS Central & Pacific besides other localized sports programming. But I could be wrong and would most humbly stand corrected on this. :)<P ID="signature">______________

Hi everyone:

> Why would NBC want the Big 10?

Umm...Because it would compliment Notre Dame Football (Especially when you consider that Notre Dame plays much of the Big 10 anyways).

> I could see FOX maybe and besides in the dog eat dog world
> of college football,

I can too.

> I think it's time that the Big 10 should do what the SEC and

They could just as easily make their games available via FOX Sports Net just like many pro sports teams do.

> They proabaly are seeing that ABC is becoming Lifetime, JR.

That's because ABC, like NBC & FOX, don't limit themselves to sports. It's an ENTERTAINMENT network. If the entertainment is some sporting event, great. If not, oh well. Either way, I highly doubt Roone Arledge nor the brass at ABC are losing any sleep or $$$ over the prospect of losing the Big 10 Conference.

> Where's CBS in this equation?

Busy televising SEC and (I believe!) ACC Football & Men's Basketball games.

Cheers :)

Jefferson-Pilot Sports is not defunct, Lincoln Financial bought them out. So it will be called Lincoln Financial Sports.

Roone Arledge is not losing any sleep. He's getting 24 hours a day since December 2002.
