Big Troubles coming down the track at WPRO

I just watched the report and he seemed very calm to me. I will watch it again. Vacation? How can he think about going on vacation?
Why is he not freaking out?

Oh you are right. On the outside.... he did seem calm. But by his speech pattern when he first got ambushed you could tell that he was nervous. Notice the big hesitation followed by talk about going on vacation..lol. If the company takes this seriously enough he may be going on a longer vacation than he had planned.

Remember: "Innocent until proven guilty."

Oh..... I know that in a court of law that is the case. But this isn't Court and I know what I saw on that tape. GUILTY! Don't forget that these remarks are coming from a guy who actually likes Depetro! I always have. But comon.... watch the tape and pay attention to body language and vauge responses. It all equals GUILTY.

Where is it?

"watch the tape and pay attention to body language and vauge responses."

I can't find that tape @ abc6.com.
If it's still there, post the link?

I thought it was there. I saw something on the Front page about it. Well do you get the Rhode Island News Channel? Crap... you are on the Island. I don't even think get cable do you? Well I saw it on TV. Maybe they will run the same piece at 11. Are you even in the area tonight? You are probably in The Ozarks or something. Well I don't know how to help you from here then. Somebody tape this for Holland and email it to him. I've got to get up to Massachusetts now and attempt to beat all these storms that are coming. I'll be back later.

I just watched the parking lot footage on ABC6's website. Maybe I'm watching the wrong thing, but Depetro seems cool calm and collected to me. I don't see any body language or posturing that would indicate someone who is guilty per se. I think he did a good job of probably doing exactly what he was told - not opening his mouth. And I didn't hear him mumble about going on vacation once.

Maybe I'm watching a different video. I thought he handled it well.

I'm not finding this...

I THOUGHT I'd clicked-on everything posted there, but don't see John-in-the-parking-lot.

Favor?
Copy-and-paste the link into a post?
THANKS

Here ya go

The beauty of this is the way JD was all over ABC6 last week when Hummel bailed. He laughed at the station and at Paul Mueller. Now a week later, look at him avoiding questions like a girly man. What a difference a week can make.

Can someone please explain to me how a person could get hold
of six Arbitron diaries? I always assumed the company guarded
and controlled them.

JD is an interesting cat. I really do enjoy his shows. Thought he was GREAT on HJJ circa 2001. However, he has become more outlandish in recent years. Quite frankly if he's only making $100K at PRO, why not stir the pot a bit? What does he have to lose? This stir, even if he did not do this himself, will receive national attention. JD loves attention & publicity.

This will further allow him to either jump back into a bigger market, or into some other form of media. Maybe he's the next Jerry Springer?
Everyone wins, WPRO gets publicity, JD gets publicity and TV time, and RI has something to talk about!

It's a shadow census

They sure do!

Placement process:
*** Select In-Tab goals by Zip Code (some areas matter more than others, including EG and Bristol Co MA)...
*** Phone call to numbers from a database that favors new landline connects...
*** Screen out media affiliations...
*** Ascertain demographics of all family members age 12+...
*** Send that many diaries (i.e., 6 if it's mom/dad/4 kids).

And a-diary-is-not-a-diary-is-not-a-diary.
The In-Tab sample is weighted up-and-down, by demographic and geography.
Some places -- and East Greenwich IS one of 'em -- are worth more than others.
Those areas get weighted-up.
Ditto for demographics; and 4 of the diaries in question went to a hard-to-sample demo that gets weighted-UP.
Why weighting (deliberate, statistical distortion of raw data): so the In-Tab population emulates the market composition.

Also, from www.HollandCooke.com:
Mathematically, heavy users (first-preference “P1s”) matter most.
Getting people-who-already-listen-lots to listen-even-more is worth more than recruiting new listeners.
El Rushbo understands how his loyal Dittoheads feel, and he validates their feelings.
Leaf blowers are OK.

WJAR 10 and WPRI 12 both had the ratings story as well today. I know this board has become the cheerleading section for 6 now, but I thought it should be known that this wasn't a 6 "exclusive".

Holland, if I may...to translate the question in english. The six diaries were all from one household. The arbitron person asks the person who answers the phone,"how many people in the household?, and what are the ages of those people?" This particular genius answered that there are 6 people living in this East Greenwich home, all between the ages of 25-34 years old. Yeah, that's a common occurance. Second genius move, all of the people in that demo ONLY listened to JD's show, and no other radio for the entire week. Brilliant Columbo !!!

YAH-mon!

THUS the flap.

When ABC6 asked me about Arbitron's "Oops," I told him that THE MARKETPLACE WORKED.
Clear Channel's due diligence was the fail-safe.

ABC 6 is all over this because JD attacked them last week while discussing his buddy Hummel's exit. He called their evening newscast a "trainwreck".

Bristol & Corwin didn't drop a dime at all...if you read any of the stories, it was Bill George (a diary-ologist as Holland can attest to). Let's all back off the wild accusations until all of the info is out. As usual, this place jumps into the pool before looking to see who peed in it!
Ma & Pa Kettle listener have no idea on who/what Arbitron is (Holland, the last research I saw was that 4 out of 10 recognized the name Arbitron; but only 3 out of 4 knew what they did-this was going back a while).
This will mean someone's job (if it is JD as everyone is speculating on b/c he is from EG, definitely will be his job as the aformentioned jail sentence in Denver shows as being stringent enforcement/prosecution) whether it be Bob Board op or Barb H and I agree w/ Holland that WPRO alumni (from Golden age alumni to Rudy & Tom G, Bruce N et al) are sad to see what is going on.

If you didn't see him say anything about vacation, then you didn't see the whole report. I hope they didn't edit it down from what they aired at 6. It sounds like they did. I think the station even said here is the full report in it's entirety. They even ran Buddy comments and then a quote by Holland Cooke. So maybe they went crazy and just ran 5 minutes of footage at 6 PM and didn't do it again after that. Crap! I hope that isn't the case. You had to see this in it's entirety to believe it. I just got home and will check the website and see what I can find.

I found the exact clip that I have speaking about. Not answering a direct question.

http://www.abc6.com/news/26365654.html

Question was: JOHN, WHAT'S THE SITUATION OUT HERE? ANY CONNECTION BETWEEN YOU AND THIS HOUSEHOLD IN EAST GREENWICH.

John's response: "YA KNOW WHAT.... I UM...... RIGHT NOW (with a quiver in his voice). I'M JUST FOCUSED ON AHH .... YA KNOW WE HAVE A GREAT MORNING SHOW, WPRO'S A GREAT STATION. AND AHH (more quivering in his voice). AS FAR AS ANYTHING OUTSIDE OF THAT, THE MANAGEMENT, THE STATION THEY'RE HANDLING IT. SO I'M JUST FOCUSED ON THE SHOW, GETTIN READY TO GO ON VACATION.... AND OUTSIDE OF THAT I THINK WE ISSUED A STATEMENT TO AH ABC6.... AND I'M CONFIDENT THE STATION WILL HANDLE EVERYTHING WITH THAT. SO OUTSIDE OF THAT YOU CAN TALK TO THEM."

But John.....That had nothing to do with the question~! He simply avoided it.

Like I said... GUILTY.

For the record...

The re-issue will have more affect on the demo numbers vs. the 12+ number of PRO-AM. 436 QH's of listening split between women and men 25-34 will have an effect especially if that demo was "short" on diaries returned and it caused that demo to be weighted more. More specifically, it cause deeper ratings damage if those 6 diaries came during a week in which return in those demos were light.

2ndly, Arbitron DOES NOT over-weigh certain zips per se...it over-weighs demos based on return in each phase. If a demo is light during Phase 1...they won't catch it until just before Phase 3 starts...which causes an over-saturation of diaries in said "weak" demo which may cause someone to get a spike in Phase 3, but then gets evened out somewhat when the overall math is done. BUT, it does still help a station that gets a lot of diaries from an over-saturated demo in the final phase, since those QH's will count more to help final weighting.
Make sense?

I'm almost certain this is the cause of the ratings spike which raised flags to other PD's, which is also causing the investigation and re-issue! If it was 436 QH's spread throughout the entire book...it wouldn't have "shown up" and no one would have caught it.

Last...Arbitron is VERY FISHY now with crediting stations with qtr hours. Now...it's more frequency based in order to give credit and there must be an established reference within a diary in order for someone to get full credit. If someone writes down WPRO throughout their diary on all 7 days...it'll become an even split of QH's to both FM and AM unless there's other notes showing specifically which one they listen to. Even if it's only 1 listening occasion for 2 QH's where they write down PRO-AM...then they'll get full credit for the entire week's listening.

Stations will even receive credit for people that claim to listen all night long while they sleep if they leave the radio on...I've seen it specifically myself in the last year. A diarykeeper actually wrote they turned a station on at 10:30pm when they went to bed and said they "listened" until they woke up at 6am. That's 30 QH's per night x 5 nights...150 phantom quarter hours of listening given to someone that didn't deserve it. What was also funny...the person's diary basically showed they listened to radio 22 out of 24 hours in a day! There's no actual logic in saying someone listened to the radio 616 QH's in a week, even while sleeping...but that's what you get with Arbitron for 6 figures every year!

Final results next week...we'll see how it plays out

RE "some areas matter more than others, including EG and Bristol Co MA"

Good point about all-that-AQH concentrated-in-one-week.

To clarify: When I noted that "some areas matter more than others, including EG and Bristol Co MA:"

Demographics are weighted.
Geography is about placement, critical for AM stations whose footprint changes day-to-night, and THAT changes month-to-month, with sunset time.

The-point-I'm-making about geography is less-complicated than the-point-I'm-making-about demography.

For this-particular-station, in this-particular-survey, East Greenwich is a bigger deal than, say 02915, where the AM signal is strong enough to come in on THE TOASTER on night pattern. But take it from a longtime night time WPRO DJ, EG has always been that station's post-sunset Twilight Zone. So in the station's first FM simulcast book, fringe Zips sure will matter...and, to your point, be conspicuous. In political jargon, these diarykeepers are "swing voters."

Historically, Bristol County MA has always been important, for several reasons:

1. It's real populous, so there'll be lots of placement in any event. In some Providence surveys, MA + CT In-Tab > RI In-Tab.
2. Some of those diaries are also used in other surveys (i.e., Boston TSA), so Arbitron carpet-bombs the county with diaries.
3. Often, Providence-based talk topics are stated-in-a-way that make-the-station-sound-like-someplace-else to people-living-outside-RI.

But it's all just data.
Or, it SHOULD be all just data...until someone messes-with-the-data.

Much-of-the-discussion here wanders into personalities.
And if a personality messed with the data, there'll be trouble alrighty.
And there IS "a smoking gun." These diaries aren't anonymous.

But it's all just data.
However-it-got-corrupted will soon be explained.

Remember two things:
1. Innocent-until-proven-guilty.
2. Two of Arbitron's biggest customers are Citadel and Clear Channel.
