Big Troubles coming down the track at WPRO

It'll blow over when it comes to news coverage for the general public who really just gives a story like this a passing glance and has little opinion about it. CCU on the other hand has an opinion about it and regardless of how Citadel spins it with their sponsors, CCU will have their own spin. Forget we radio people and radio geeks who enjoy talking about it. The people whose opinions will actually affect on which station the money is going to be spent are paying attention. Unless WPRO offers up someone as a sacrifice to disassociate themselves from the person/people responsible they're being naive. And if it's honestly a case where no one at the station knew this was happening then they should want the facts publicly known.

I think a sacrifice will be offered to the radio gods. It won't happen quickly because that will bring out the finger of guilt. It will be done down the line hoping people won't connect it with this incident.

And what happened to all the blogs on the WPRO website? No one is blogging anymore.

Drama Queens!!!

Guys Guy Guys!! There are FELONS doing talk shows! If you think ANYONE is losing their job cause 1 house had a played book, YOU'VE BEEN IN RADIO TOO LONG!!
This stories legs just gave out.. good night.

Holland-

Are you just being dramatic, or do you REALLY feel that they should take Salty's name off the building? BE HONEST.

BTW, I agree the station has been tainted.

Bad public relations by CDL.

FINALLY, some good news for Citadel: My LAST post on this matter...

We in Southeastern New England have had a front-row seat for a compelling story that radio people all-across-the-USA have been following.

Hey, it's serious business, as we see in those Before and After numbers.
Media reports have explained how-the-ratings-work...and don't work, when there's funny business.

We've also had a dang clinic in PR, specifically how-NOT-to-manage a "bad news" situation.

And right here, a forum for talking-about radio, we've had a chance to do just that...to hash-it-out.
Sure, there've been quips and snipes. That comes with the territory.
In-order-to-HAVE an unfettered conversation, you need to let people join-in anonymously.
And when you don't have to sign-your-name-to what-you're-saying, talk can sometimes be cheap.
Filtering-out the static is a small price to pay to be able to share this conversation here.

I'm told that WPRO forbids its employees from posting here.
It's obvious some do.
So anonymity lets them participate.

I choose to sign my name.

I'M NOT MAKING THIS UP!

Although I have not identified myself as-such in this thread, I am known to be associated with McVay Media, the biggest radio consulting firm in the world.

Today, my 14-year colleague and friend Mike McVay told me he's heard from SENIOR MANAGEMENT at Citadel, and they are NOT amused that I'm involved in this conversation. They're particularly miffed that I mentioned the stock price (99 cents, unchanged, at today's close).

THEY'RE miffed???
THEY'RE miffed???
I, their long-suffering shareholder, am unamused!
But I digress...

Adding-insult-to-self-inflicted-injury, CORPORATE sent Mike the bolt-from-Zeus.

Maybe they couldn't find my number, so they called him.
Yeah, that's it.

Because interrupting Mike to-shoot-the-messenger is so INCREDIBLY unfair to him, I offered to him to bow-out-of this thread...which he didn't ask me to do.

But I've said-what-I-had-to-say about this, much of it, you will note, in response to posts here which ask me, BY NAME, to explain this-or-that. And, for several reasons, this whole episode has been painful to me personally.

Accordingly, I will now exit this particular conversation, so Mike can get-back-to-doing-what-he-was-doing before he was so rudely interrupted, and so Citadel can get-back-to-work pumping-up the value of my shares. Now that I'll refrain from posting stock quotes, you can simply type "CDL" into Google, and watch how-much-better things get now that I'm not discussing the Arbitron Providence Re-Issue in a local Internet chat.

In my earlier post, the one that blew Citadel's fuse, I referred to "the WPRO politburo."
Every time I hear that unsubstantiated, self-congratulatory "STATION OF RECORD" claim, I think "USSR."

Meanwhile, people have taken control of their media, and are voting-against self-appointed authority.
Rather than reading Consumer Reports or movie reviews, they want to peruse USER COMMENTS.
"Social media." CONVERSATION.

People have become disillusioned with authority, because authorities aren't straight with 'em.
("WE WILL BE WELCOMED AS LIBERATORS.")

Good evening from Las Vegas, where I'm attending the New Media Expo podcasting convention.
110 degrees here today, "but it's 'a dry heat.'"

I thought of WPRO during a session here today.
The speaker runs a web site that has 5 million unique users per year, 10 million a month, 600,000 per day.
And her company's marketing budget is -- literally -- ZERO dollars.
(If you were here, wouldn't YOU want to hear her outline how-they-do-what-they-do?)

Her fundamental point about what-we-now-call "social media" was: “Be OK with a dialogue with the user about what’s good and bad.”

Yet that eludes A TALK RADIO STATION, the original social medium.

Holland-

Citadel is miffed? My God, the news headline at the home page of this board made mention that CDL is at risk for being delisted by NASDQ because of the stock price.

I wonder if they're mad at the Wall Street Journal too?

I have the pleasure of knowing Mike McVay too and know him to be a stand up guy. Plus, I would consider him a friend of the First Amendment. I doubt that he would partner in pressuring you to stop your valuable commentary. My goodness, you have given WPRO FREE consultanting for at least a year. That's what Mike should be angry about. . .giving away the store. My guess is McVay Media clients pay a pretty penny for the type of advice you share here.

AAAAAAAAlfeeeeeeeeee I agree I've been in radio too long but that has nothing to do with this issue. Just wait down the line at who leaves WPRO. It may be months but this story will be the real reason.

I meant to type "50 million unique users per year..."

OK...NOW I'm done...

I was done with this about a week ago. But not because WPRO is miffed. WPRO, Citadel and all it's entities can kiss my ass. Their problems are not my concern. Who cares what they think? I just got bored with this conversation. However that station is being monitored by people who can actually change the fate of what happens down the road..... and it's not the people who post on this board. That's for sure. We are just the audience at a movie screening. We can't change the outcome. But I can say with certainty that we will each have a strong opinion by the time the closing credits hit the screen.

It's similar to seeing a boyfriend and girlfriend who are clearly all wrong for each other. He'll complain about her or she'll bitch about him. Either way you already know that it's only a matter of time before the relationship self destructs on it's own. You don't even need to say or do anything. Well that is how I feel about what's going on here with WPRO. Citadel management is doing just a fine job at paving their own road to ruins. One day they will just self destruct and it's not going to have a single thing to with any one of us here. It's going to be their own fault. It's going to happen based on their own idiotic decisions. We are just the ones with the popcorn waiting for the train wreck to happen.

As a former alumnus of the Trail (I am not cowering to hide my identity that i am the former Ted Edwards) I have to tell those who are in charge at the Trail that the little statements they have issued have hurt the view of them, not only by the former employees (Holland being one, myself another); but a number of people I currently work with have come up to me and asked me how/why this could have happened and to explain a little more what Jim Corwin was talking about on Ch 12, Ch 6 & in the newspaper.

GET OUTSIDE OF THE BOX!
Realize, as I did after I left the building, that things you do (OR DON'T DO) make an impact on your listening audience. If I, who have been out of the building for 15 years, gets asked questions about stuff going on in the building currently because the people asking me the questions haven't heard anything from the station or management, there is a problem, people. Not all publicity (whether good or bad) is good, this is one of those cases.
At this point, it is too far beyond the event to make a dent in the bad press that has been flying around for 2 weeks and would look like bad damage control.
I think Holland would concur (but he isn't commenting on this thread any more because someone went and tattletailed to Mommy) that too little too late at this point and hopefully there won't be a large drop come the summer book that will further validate the salt that is in the wound currently.

Today the lightbulb finally went off !!! Why is everything so hushed, and why will DePetro go without punishment? His best friend Mitch Dolan. Mitch is protecting his buddy by telling everyone to stiffle and let the story die. But it won't with the advertisers. They are already losing business because of their silence. Mitch was the one who bumped St.Pierre out of a winning daypart because Johnny D wanted to be the next Salty. Poor Salty.

Salty is now is a different dimension. Citadel is no longer making moves around what Salty would think. They couldn't care less. But realisticly would you really expect them to? Salty had his time on the planet and it was a great time for WPRO. It's a time that will go down in the history books. But the past is the past. Things can't stay the same forever. It's a nice thought to believe the station would want to uphold his good name and image by playing nice. But that's not the way life works. Just think of what has taken place in that building since Salty worked there. I'm confident that Salty got tired of turning over a long time ago. Let's think of the good memories and hold them close. At the same time let's think realisticly and realize that life is ever changing and nothing ever stays the same. WPRO isn't Salty's radio station anymore.

Hey Holland: It didn't work! Citadel closed at 88 cents today.

And because you're probably traveling here's something you might have missed in the Boston papers today: http://bostonherald.com/business/media/view.bg?articleid=1114183

Those Herald reporters better be careful writing things like "brazen act of cheating" and "swept under the rug" and calling WPRO advertisers. Some Citadel bigshot will complain to the Editor.

I'm sorry, did I miss something? Does Mike Mc Vay consult newspapers now too!?! Bwahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Holland batten down the hatches! Tis myself and the ankle biters invade the little piece of sod off the south coast on Monday
