Biggest media tune-outs of 2012

N

Ninth caller

Guest
Let's show station ownership why they are losing viewership and/or listenership by accepting these advertisers. I will start: Duane Paddock - phony pitch, phony smile. Billy Fuccillo - obnoxious, picks cheesy co-stars. Catharine McCracken - see Duane Paddock!

Whew. Glad to know WYSL won't be losing any "viewers" because of obnoxious commercials depicting "phony smiles." Did you notice: this is a RADIO discussion board??

Billy Fuccillo & Co. sell a lot of cars...using RADIO. Commercials are a matter of personal taste. A few people may tune away if a spot is particularly annoying, but they'll be back.

Do Fuccillo or Paddock spots have a significant negative impact on audience? I doubt it.

i am not even sure why I am replying
as makes little sense ....
where u sold a car..and got a raw deal ?
...and the 9th caller just signed up...
today...but will say this:

it is more powerful to buy "local" versus the
easy to find big boy.. as citad...errrrr
cumulus runs their ads....support local
your $$$$ goes three times farther..
but if u hear the whole ad, it is just a slick
way to say , advertise on our cluster!! eeeven if*
u are not a local business owner.... .... ... *gasp*

Some of the WORST. EVER!!!! spots I can remember ran in Da Apple when I lived in Westchester 1977-81.

Yep, New York City.

Crazy Eddie, Mr. Carvel to name two of the worst offenders...but those were two brands who endeared themselves to the public back in the day. Billy Fuccillo is just the Upstate equivalent. And from my years in advertising, I can tell you firsthand he's VERY effective.

What comes to mind first when YOU hear "HUGE!"??

Anybody with half a brain would boycott these idiots. Let' s hear from some new posters besides the same old on this site!

I've known and worked with Billy Fuccillo since he started his Auto Mall in Adams/Watertown in the late 1980s. There's no one, no one that has done more for the broadcasting industry (radio/TV) in the markets he has dealerships. The ads work. And they pay a lot of bills for the radio stations he advertises on. He always pays on time. He single handedly increased the value of our radio stations by $750,000 dollars. How can that be bad? We need more advertisers like Billy who know that frequency works.

Have you noticed the state of the broadcasting industry? At this point, the people left who are still working will take anybody's money and run just about anything legal that somebody's willing to pay for.

Tune-outs aren't limited to commercials. Songs we've hear 937 times, jocks telling tired jokes or uninteresting stories, talk show hosts beating the same drum, news people who can't read a story, overdone promos, and oh yeah, posters hacking the same mantra, have the same effect. So we might not buy what they're selling. But we know WHO they are and WHAT they're selling, just as we know the phone numbers of at least two legal firms in Buffalo. In this sense, radio advertising works. It's a testament to the power of frequency and placement and every sales rep can point to these advertisers when pitching clients who've never used radio. That said, a seasoned sales rep confirms that Billy Fucillo-Fernandez does in fact spend a lot of money on radio and TV, but he's a notorious rate grinder.

We're bombarded with internal and external messages every minute of the day. The very fact that we KNOW these characters indicates their advertising and marketing cut through the flotsam and debris. Don't like 'em? Change the station or channel; don't buy the product. You're the boss of your radio, TV and DVR.

And Billy USES these lemmings that call on him, bringing the whole market (or, should I say, multiple markets), to the lowest common denominator. Duane Paddock hears his deal and grinds the same. The message puts ratings for those stations that accept the business in the toilet because it is so obnoxious. TownSquare further makes it worse by granting Fuccillo the first position in the break. The guy that is boasting how great Billy is by giving the station hundreds of thousands of dollars .... Ask yourself: wouldn't you rather get better rates from clients that won't push you like Billy's paying "10 cents on the dollar" (actual quote) for your rates? And, if your ratings were better without this crass, mumbling buffoon assaulting your listeners, could you increase your revenue to more than make up for his crappy deals? This writer thinks so.

The Fucillo commercials are a double edge sword. He does FAR more TV in Buffalo than he does radio. He demands low rates in exchange for a guranteed, paid for buy. If the radio station or TV station is desperate, they will take his business, if not, they will walk from it. The spots are a total tune out! They sound horrible, and you are right, Entercom does not accept this business in Buffalo, and rightfully so. Nobody I have ever talked to, likes his commercials, especially radio spots. And by the way, for the amount of money he spends in the Buffalo market, he has some of the worst sales numbers of any dealer locally. He is not even a threat to other dealers. He spots deter people from buying. LIke I said, if you are a desperate radio station, TV station, or person, you will go with Fuccillo.

I don't know about Buffalo, but Billy Fucillo has not been on any TV or radio spots in many months in the Rochester market. His spokespeople for his Hyundai (Tom Park) and Kia (Caroline Renfro) dealerships here are reasonably pleasant, and arguably a lot less obnoxious than many other dealers.

It's actually gotten to the point where my wife will go through the trouble of muting TV audio when a Fucillo commercial comes on. Some people may like him but by the same token others hate him. Personally I would never purchase a vehicle from him. I imagine he has these spots done to his liking and taking that into consideration he wouldn't recognize good production values if they personally slapped him silly. Maybe it's the engineer in me but the period of time last year where his spots had distorted audio was nauseating. If he thinks that's great marketing he needs to get an agency that can steer him in the right direction.

Somewhat off topic... but it seems that someone didn't like Rochester's GEVA Theatre advertising its Christmas Carol performances in 2011 with the tag line:

"It's SCROOOOOOOOOOOOGE, Rochester, SCROOOOOOOOOOGE."

I only heard the ad once. Pity.

As for the HUGE dealer, I did drag my family there so they would appreciate what I was not having to put them through while I shopped for a vehicle.

I also will never call 454-2020... oops, I mean 888-8888. (Sing it with me now!) Or 222-2222 or 444-4444 either.

But EVERYONE HERE knew who he was, and what he sold. Same cant be said for the majority of businesses in WNY..and we are discussing him now..so SOMETHING. WORKED.

"...buy today, drive today"

Those ads are so unsuccessful that he now has a network of only 22 dealerships, only 31 franchises, only one Lear jet, only 1400 employees, only $800 million in annual sales, and only a net worth of $450 million. I'm sure the advice from this forum would help him out of his slump.

If this topic was on the TV board then I would have to comment that as a viewer I am getting so sick of commercials featuring lawyers (no offense Roberto) ;), drugs for guys having a problem getting their junk to operate ( you know what I mean), and of course car commercials one after the other.

I understand the need to sell advertising but some of these commercials are just so damn annoying. And NO I wouldn't buy a car from "Billy".....hire any attorney with a 888....444...222 telephone number.....or take a drug that might give me stiff wood but the side effects include a heart attack or even death.
