Biggest Sports Event of the Year

I was late getting home for USA vs. Canada, arguably the biggest sports event of the year - especially in a great hockey town with a hometown presence on the ice and in the coaches box. Scan the dial looking for the game. What did we have on our "Sports Leader"? Our "Home of the Sabres"?

Sure wasn't hockey.

TGFCR. Oh, Canada, you saved my bacon, eh?

Hey, Rox, WGR did air the game. I listened to a bit of it in the second period. Not sure what might have happened after I went back to the TV that has you wondering where the game was.

As of 3PM they were still on the bird airing NASCAR. I found the game on Canadian radio and never looked back.

The puck didn't drop until closer to 3:30...perhaps WGR was just waiting to get as much NASCAR in as they could before cutting over to hockey action?

I have no idea who, if anyone, had the game on radio here in Rochester. Wild horses couldn't have pulled me away from the HDTV screen in the family room!

I am no hockey fan but DAMN! Whoever that guy Doc was should be given some kinda Gold Medal. He probably has icepacks around his neck/vocal chords right now and for the foreseeable future. Great game.

I usually don't reply to these threads but the lead post is ridiculously incorrect.

1) The coverage started at 3:05 PM from Vancouver.
2) WGR never aired the NASCAR race. We aired the Niagara game and the ESPN Radio to fill until the pregame.
3) Brian Koziol (Sabres host) did a local postgame after the Westwood postgame.

If anyone ever has a question about our programming, I'd love to hear from you.

Ridiculously incorrect? As I said, from 2:45 - 3PM, no hockey, no mention of hockey, and somebody talking about NASCAR. Since I'm not a NASCAR fan, I didn't know - or care - whether it was pre-race, post-race, or non-race - it was somebody yammering on about NASCAR long enough for me to hit "scan". I checked back until 3PM, then decided to stick with Canadian radio.

As far as questions about your programming are concerned, be careful what you wish for.

Some tongue-in-cheek info-board whoop-dee-doop here. As the radio debate continues....
I AM a Nascar fan and was catching the radio for coverage. Then a hockey game came on...and I'm not a fan of hockey. So it was enough to hit "scan".

Can radio be all things to all people? I think not. ::)
That is all

Mike (Doc) Emrick is the play by play voice of the New Jersey Devils. He was every bit as good as the game, however the two qoutes I remember weren't from him...

Al Michaels, after showing a clip featuring CBC's Don Cherry, "I didn't know it was Halloween in Canada." Grapes' wardrobe was actually subdued...

Ryan Miller, being interviewed after the game, "We were an afterthought to most." Hopefully Team USA got the respect of the rest of the hockey world...

I don’t have a dog in this fight (not a NASCAR fan and, concerning hockey, a fan of the RIT Tigers only—although I did watch the Canada-USA match, and Doc did call a great game). But, unless I’m reading more into andyroth’s comment than I should be (a distinct possibility), he seems to be implying that this isn’t the proper forum to debate this topic (listeners should instead call him first with their concerns). I would counter that this is the perfect place for this discussion. Thanks, Rox, for raising an interesting subject.
