Biggest Surprises of the Year/Radio

Year's just about done, so an early start cowboys on Surprises of the year  Here are my top seven.

* Bonneville buys KIRO/KTTH/KBSG. Deal is actually an LMA right now. Bonny promptly shakes up the top brass at all stations, rebuilding KIRO and redoes KBKSto B-97.3
So far no success on the FM, AM is improving :)
* KMPS rebounds under strong attack from WOLF. Internal troubles hurt WOLF, aging KMPS morning show gets second life
* KISS and END continue their long decline. KBKS hires programming legend Steve Rivers: a damn cool shocker  First trend is pretty impressive for Stevo.
* Shakeup at KMTT as new Pd arrives, old PD leaves, then comes back as MD. Station is number one 25-54 at the end of it all ;D
* STAR shakes up aC playing Country and CHR hits mixed with their ac stuff. Girly Ratings jump and they beat WARM. Country helps another Seattle station.Aging morning show gets second life ???
* Sad news as Market legends JP Patches and Larry Nelson fight for their lives :'(
* PPM preparation takes place at all outlets as broadcasters move to a non-interuption style to drive numbers in the new world. Jsut went through a big ole
presentation on this. Wow things are gonna change :-\

Everything else about as expected cowboys with AM radio continuin to have troubles as pointed out on this board. MOVIN, JACK continue to erode. KZOK, KCMS,
KUBE all rock solid. This cowboy doubts anyone will change formats until more is known about the PPM. There will be some big ole surprises them

A bit early yet to look back on the year. The big surprises for me were the Bonneville purchase, the success of KISW without Howard Stern, the success of KMTT with their heritage morning show gone and the PD shakeups, the continued strength of the Christian format KCMS.

The rest of your surprises are not that unusual. KMPS and KPLZ typically find ways to stay on top in key female demographics and I suspect KRWM will rebound this Fall with their annual Christmas music approach. I also don't find the decline of KBKS or KNDD shocking, since both have been on decline for a couple of years. KQMV and JACK off about 30% from last year is not surprising either, they were niche formats. The PPM seems to be as advertising benefiting high cume FM stations, hurting TSL based stations. I do think some stations will change format prior to the arrival of the PPM. KBSG is likely to simulcast KIRO, unless it can find a way to win. KNDD, I suspect, will revamp and take an older Gen-X focus and will can the talk shows. AM dial will also be in flux as evidenced by the recent move at KVI. Change is part of radio.

It is always important to reflect on the great broadcasters each year that are ill or have passed on. They all contributed a great deal to the growth of the radio business and touched many lives over the years.

The UGLIEST surprise this year by far was the murder of Mike Webb. And I really hope Scott White gets his for it....
