...after KGBS, Billo took the Feminine Forum over to KIEV for a while...there's a damned good student film titled WEDNESDAY http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0168251/ (I wrote the user comment) in which Jack Lemmon plays a radio talker obviously based on Billo, tho the station identified in it is KRTH, where I'm fairly sure Billo never worked (Gene Weed, who also appears in it, didn't work for KRTH either)...

Bill & Hudson & Landry racked up some great #'s on that daytimer back in the early
70's. KGBS, if they had a night pattern in 1971 they would have been even stronger.
Not a bad format, Chicken Rock with heavy personality. I think Ballance was #3 in
Mid-days while he was at 1020. It was like an oasis from the hype of Top 40 and the
laid back Lennys on KMET & KLOS. Kind of KFWB reborn.

Ballance spawned at least one imitator. When I moved to the SF Bay Area in 73, I was astonished to find Don Chamberlin's "California Girls" show on KNEW, which otherwise had an Oldies format...the Beach Boys' hit was the opening theme music naturally. The show was a spot-on copy of the Ballance and the Feminine Forum in format and style. Chamberlin even sounded like Ballance - with a very similar voice and manner.
As I remember, both shows tried to be titillating, but also sincerely tried to be an open forum and give good advice to the callers. Both hosts were definitely a product of the times, and treated the mostly female callers in a kind of sexist manner that would not be appropriate today. Having said that, callers were treated well, and not with the contempt you'll find on current shows like Dr. Laura.
