Bill Beutel 1930-2006

Uh, I Just Saw Good Morning America Sunday and it just learned that Bill Beutel, the longtime ABC and WABC-TV anchor for 40 years has just passed away of Alzheimer's Disease at age 75. He will be missed by the ABC family.
Edited by highwayman128 on 03/19/06 10:58 PM.

Radio-Info Rule #3

> source: WABC-TV

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE honor rule #3 and do not post copyrighted material here!

I checked the WABC-TV website and at the bottom of the page you cut and pasted was:

(Copyright 2006 WABC-TV)

It would have been far better to post the link to the article, which would not have infringed WABC's copyright.

I don't want to see the owners ban people over this, but they are serious about that rule, as they can be sued over it.
______________

While Bill Beutel anchored or co-anchored WABC-7's local news for most of the period between 1962 and 2001, he did do some work for ABC News over two brief periods. The first was in the late sixties when he was a London correspondent; the other was in January of 1975, when he was named by ABC News to co-host "AM America", ABC's ill-fated first attempt at a morning news program. BTW, Stephanie Edwards was Beutel's co-host, and Peter Jennings appeared at the top and bottom of the hour to update the news.

"AM America" was a ratings disaster and was replaced in the Fall of 1975 by "Good Morning America", which at first was (except for the news updates on the hour and half-hour) produced by ABC's entertainment division.

Good luck and be well up there Bill.

Whenever I listened to Paul Harvey's morning news commentary in the mid 80s, Beutel would sometimes substitute. His signoff when pinch hitting for PH was "Good luck and be well." Did he use this on all his newscasts?

Yes, starting around the early 1980s I believe. He used it all the way to his 2001 retirement.
