Bill Currie

Thanks so much for your comments! Wow - has it been that long?
He has been gone from N.C. longer than that, and his passing still generated quite a bit of media coverage on TV and in the newspaper. He was one of a kind, and many people still remember him from his years with the University of North Carolina sports network and WSOC-TV in Charlotte. He was outrageous here first :)
Would you please help us get the word out that there is an online obituary that can be viewed at www.hickoryrecord.com under "Obituaries". In that website there is also an online guestbook where people can sign on and leave their comments for us in his memory. We will put all of this together for his memorial service in Yelm Washington on 3/15/08. He was living there to be close to my sister. She did a fantastic job helping him remain independent and live in his own apartment. We would really appreciate you getting the word out about this up there around Pittsburgh. People can also e-mail me directly at [email protected]. Thanks!

Greg Benedetti writing to you Susan to offer by deepest sympathy over the passing of my good friend Bill Currie. I worked with Bill in 1971 and 72 at KD radio for 60-to-6 sports coverage and worked television sports with him from 1976 thru 1979. Afterwards, we remained good friends and a visited him regularly. Bill's passing has left me personally saddened and again, I offer my heartfelt condolences.

Thanks Greg. It's really good to hear from you! Do you have a funny or interesting story that we could use in his memorial on 3/15? Do you know of any one else who might want to contribute?
Peace

Susan,

I grew up listening to your dad and his partner Ray Reeve, calling Carolina basketball games and the Dixie Classic Tournament (held in Raleigh). He was one of three or four of his generation who were responsible for my 40 years in the radio business!

When he left, I discovered I was not a Tar Heel fan, but a Bill Currie fan!

Best wishes for you and your family!

Thanks Mike. I think you described what a lot of people experienced. He was very entertaining and unique in the way he did the ball games.
Thanks for writing and we'll be sure to include your comments in the memorial service. Did you read his obituary at www/hickoryrecord.com under Obituaries for 2/17/08 for Bill Currie? It pretty much sums him up! :D
Peace
Susan Currie Smith
