Bill Drake Has Died!

Sad, sad day. Can't believe he's gone. Bill seemed like one of those guys who would be here forever.

I had the privilege of being PD of his consulted stations KAKC/Tulsa (first to run Drake-by-Drake instead of Drake-by-copying, away from the west coast) and WHBQ/Memphis. After the mess of over-commercialization and "talking to keep from being just a jukebox," even though what was being said wasn't worth anything like another song to the audience, Bill's straight-ahead approach was like finally getting to breathe again. As for the detractors who said Drake jocks were nothing but time&temp machines, anyone who really listened to Drake stations knows that comment should have a JPEG of male bovine excreta attached.

Bill Drake (nee Philip T. Yarbrough), R I P.
