Bill Drake

Hard to believe no one has commented on the passing of Bill Drake on this board. He had a HUGE impact on Syracuse and Utica radio. In the late 60's WOLF was actually a Drake formated station and threw a very stale WNDR into a tail spin from which it never fully recovered.
Although WRUN was never actually a Drake station just about everything he came up with was used to knock off WTLB. Ironically, WTLB actually used Drake jingles and WRUN used sound alikes.
If you have never heard a Drake station, WSEN is about the closest thing to the sound in the area.
And the hits just keep on coming!

P.S. to the post above. I guess I am getting senile. I forgot about WOUR being a Drake Chenault automated station in the early 70's with Hit Parade and Solid Gold Rock & Roll And later on WKGW KG-104 had an automated Drake Chenault for several years.

No kidding? Was he a local? I know the Hot Hits format was created by Mike Joseph here in Syracuse on 1390am (14fbl) and went on to do much better in much bigger markets. I also remember 104.7 automation, you can hear it in my music mix.
