"Bro" Bill worked for me at 690 WAPE. He acted as a decoy when WAPE had it's big trucking convoy from St Augustine to Jacksonville in the mid 70's. Geaseman was promoted as the guy driving the lead 18 wheeler. Since Grease and WAPE kept his identity a secret, to protect the image, Bro Bill was reruited to ride in the lead truck and wave at the many fans who showed up to see Nino. No one knew that the real Greaseman was also riding in the truck, but didn't look anything like he sounded! Bill was a gentle and kind man with old fahioned southern manners RIP Bro. We love you man!

I worked with Bill at B98.5FM up til about 2003 or so. He was doing weekend overnights and I'd follow him Saturdays at 6am. I really enjoyed spending time with him. He had tons of great radio stories, particularly about his days at the Big Ape in Jacksonville and the Greaseman (with whom I'd worked when I programmed WARW in Washington D.C. back in the 90's).

Plus: he was a total pro. Whatever the station needed done, he did, no muss or fuss. Often he'd be in the production room hours after he got off at 6am, taking care of last minute stuff that needed doing--and without having to be asked. Bill always considered it a privilege to work in radio and never forgot how lucky we were to be doing what we were doing.

What a nice guy--he'll be missed!

Bill followed my "Saturday Night Dance Party" on B98.5 and a nicer guy you would have a hard time finding. he did all nights, but was one of the last remaining "radio fraternity" types..We would go to eat before my shift at White Columns in 1993. "Barnacle Bill" always knew where the all you can eat Prime Rib was..and we did our share of dinners and story swapping. He was genuine, and real. A truly good person. Sad news.

"Barnacle Bill" had such a positive attitude and could spin many a yarn. How sad that he has left us at so young an age. If only everyone could go through life with a smile on his face and a "can do it" attitude. G-d speed, my friend!

I actually remember hearing Bill Duncan after the Saturday Night Dance Party when I was a little kid and my mom thought I was sleeping. You just don't hear voices like that anymore. He's part of why B98.5 was my favorite station back then and he will definitely be missed.

Does anyone have any airchecks of him on B98.5 by any chance?

I have one aircheck, so far that I have found in my collection. Its a VERY scoped aircheck, that I cut so that almost all of the music and commercials is cut out.
Its just my Bro, doing his thing and sounding great. Bill was a great guy and I will miss him for a long time.

bill was my dad. sorry i wasnt at his funeral but i didnt want that to be the last images of him. within a year of his death, i had to watch his mother die and rot without having told him how much she loved him before she parted. i emailed kelly mccoy and got a very hmm well not a very personal reply. might as well have been his secretary talking to me. i watched him slave at that radio station and countless others for years while he barely got by because none of them were truly willing to give the man his due being in the business twice as long as most of these other pricks.

im glad those who really liked him keep his memory as do i. i had many burdens to bare with him suffering and my grandmother (his mother) suffering all pretty much in the same 365 days. i have diabetes now and i know how felt all those years. makes me wonder of my own fate sometimes. im glad of all the men that god has ever created that he happened to be the one picked to help bring me into this world. im keeping his email addy up if anyone wants to say good bye to him one last time.

Thank you John for that tribute to the man who also helped to change my life in many many many ways. I know you know who I am, the piano, pictures for your dad? Remember? I will forever miss him and hope that he is on the biggest radio transmitter heaven has to offer. He was a true radio trooper, and you are right, I will remember that last time I ever saw him the rest of my life. Your were lucky to have him for a father... One last time: Bro Bill , I loved ya, keep on rockin to the hits up there..

John,

I new your Dad and he was a very special person. I only wish I could have met him sooner, but I do know this, he loved you very much. I also know he wants you to take care of yourself and keep your diabetes in check. We all need to keep Bill's memory alive in any way we can.
