Bill Flynn at WHAM

I have been hearing Bill Flynn during the daylight hours doing news on WHAM. I am glad they are giving him the chance "to shine". He has been on the graveyard shift for a long time. I thought he did a good job when he was at WXXI.

I had the fortunate pleasure of working with Bill at WXXI for many years until he, and overnight blues host Jim McGrath, were let go as part of a budget cutting measure at the station.

Not many people may be aware of this but Bill has perhaps won more awards than any present radio or TV newscaster in Rochester. Besides winning numerous AP awards over the years Bill has also been honored with several Edward R. Murrow awards, which unfortunately are either stored in the basement of WXXI, or were tossed out during renovations of the station a few years ago.

It would be decent if the station's management would at least give Bill his awards, if they are still there, so that he can have something to show his children of his many accomplishments.

Bill worked very hard to get where he's at today and I'm glad that the management at WHAM is giving him a chance to display his talents as both a newscaster and especially when it comes to feature and sports reporting.

Yes Bill Lowe is missed by many, including yours truly. However I'm glad that Bill Flynn is being given the opportunity to be part of the WHAM news team.

Sherry Smith is off this week, so Randy's been doing mornings, and Bill & Brendan are doing the afternoons.

In a business that eats its young it is nice to read where someone is given the opportunity to grow in radio.
As I've been told Mr. Flynn started out as an overnight operator responsible for monitoring several Clear Channel owned stations in Rochester. To go from that to a position in the newsroom is certainly a promotion for Mr. Flynn and perhaps well deserved.
What is truly a shame is that local news continues to be the "whipping boy" for budget cuts.
I'm referring to the departure (if you want to call it that) of Bill Lowe at WHAM and Bud Lowell at WXXI. Both men combined had over 60 years worth of experience in the Rochester market.
Both stations, by reducing their news department personnel, are not, in my opinion, serving the general public. And now that the Democrat & Chronicle has laid off over 40 employees, one has to wonder where these radio and TV stations will get their news from?
An uninformed public is just that....uninformed.

Great to hear that Bill's getting a more prominent role. I had the pleasure of working with him for 14 years at WXXI, where among other things he handled the technical direction of my daily talk show. He was, and is, one of the best. His talents go way beyond those of technical director--he's one of the most creative and talented feature reporters and producers you'll find anywhere.

All the best to you, Bill....

Thanks for remembering. But it wouldn't be a complete memory unless Talk Show Producer Carol Colella was mentioned. She completes that days work by HR. We certainly were ahead of the curve as far as "getting the axe in radio" goes. Who knew that pub radio could lead the way for the rest of radio to follow? ;D

My apologies for forgetting to mention Carol.

It's a shame the three of you were not as fortunate as recent employees who were offered "early retirement incentives" aka: Leave now or else.
