Bill from Beth & Bill retires, Beth Goes Solo March 1st

Congrats Mr. Austin! That was a classy send-off. We all hope your next chapter is joyous and fulfilling. Here's to your good health and happiness! ~Stu

ANYBODY who thrives for 20 years in a partnership on radio must count themselves blessed, and it seems both Beth and Bill do. Hell, I've heard Ghandi was hard to work with.

Congratulations and much happiness going forward, Bill.

And Beth, I'm available...call me.

Phil from Bev & Phil is calling it quits? YIKES! Nurse Jeff and I remember when he was Mc12's weather guesser...and had hair! Just for the heck of it....how many co-anchors has Bev had over the years at Ninety Nine~9?

Bill's radio career speaks for itself. What's more impressive though is how great of a guy he is. Everyone who walked in that studio, no matter who you were, he treated like a friend.

Good luck, Bill! We'll miss you!

It's too bad that Beth & Bill are not longer on 3TV: Tara Hitchcock could have broken the news first before Bill had a chance to say it, like she did announcing that Tim & Willy were leaving KNIX.

You beat me by 47 seconds :) I knew it would happen.

No you beat me. You deserve all the credit. I was the second to post. I was hoping to be the first. Great job on beating me.

I wanted to just add a few thoughts I enjoyed Beth & Bill on my drive to school in the mornings. I also will miss the FOX 10 Multiple Morning check ins.

They had great chemistry together.

Good luck to Bill in this new chapter he is about to begin.

Will be curious to see how Beth & Friends show works out.

What a great career and I echo the comments, in this day and age of constant job changes and not staying one place too long, or so I'm told from liberal college professors, great on making a 20 year career Bill. Woohoo!!!! CONGRATS!!!!!!

It's all beside the point anyway. From everything I'm reading here, Bill sounds like a class act and is a shining example of why local radio talent is so special. I've never met him, and I've been only an occassional listener to the show, but I certainly wish Bill the best in his new endeavors.

I did not work at KEZ for very long & did some very menial tasks there, but Bill was always good to me. If the guy has an ego, he doesn't show it.

Someone above asked how many sidekicks that Beth has had at KEZ. She went through a handful.

My lasting memory of B&B was watching them roll in at 5:59:59 (Sure, the "show" started at 5, but that just meant that the jingles & rates started then), sitting down at the desk with wire copy pre-ripped at each seat, and cracking the mic at 6 reading the stories cold & riffing on them while sounding like they'd been preparing for hours. That takes talent!

Just a quick note to salute Bill Austin. I don't know him personally (only met him once about 10 years ago in a "sea of faces" setting), but I can speak as a listener and big fan who has always marvelled at his natural talent.

He is quite simply one of the finest broadcast performers I have ever heard -- anywhere. World class. He had a knack for making listeners feel like they knew him, he was your friend, and a great guy (which I'm told he is).

His humor, quick wit, and natural style has always lifted the performance of anyone he's been teamed with. Back in the day, as a TV weather guy he even made those happy-talk news format transitions work without sounding cheesy (he always had the appropriate comeback line that made the others look good, and him look great). And alongside Beth McDonald for the past 20 years, his presence and ad-lib content was second to none.

As a listener, I selfishly hope that Bill will get bored silly doing all his retirement traveling and yearn to be back on the air in the morning here in the Valey so we can all hear him again sometime soon. His "use-by" date is FAR from over!

Meantime, let's all hoist our glasses in a sincere toast.

Enjoy your retirement, Bill. God bless and God speed.

Warmly,
T W

It was a treat to work at KEZ, if only to discover that Bill Austin was just as funny and sweet in the airstaff meetings, as he was on the air. He is a gifted comedian and nice person. For those who couldn't get past the music, you missed one of the best talk radio shows in Phoenix. Now, in the era of PPM, hopefully this type of show will survive by transitioning to the talk stations.

Bill Andres (another natural comedian, and former Phoenix morning man) wrote a great blog on Austin's departure.
