Bill Gardner OUT @ KOOL !

I only learned of this website recently ~ and was heartened to learn I am not a “Lone Ranger,” missing Bill Gardner. I never had the pleasure of meeting Bill, but sense his sincerity is the Real Deal, not merely a smooze to garner ratings. While I’ve little doubt Bill will be just fine, this situation is incredibly sad for those of us who counted on his Morning Team to jump-start our mornings.

While I agree (that) the CBS suits have made an ill-advised move, those (industry) decisions are commonplace. If it makes you feel better to author a letter to New York City, go for it! However, don’t think it will actually be read ~ or expect a response. Too, KOOL’s advertising spots are often placed across the market via big ad shops, so boycotting the sponsors is not that effective.

Aside from Mike Evans' segment, my family and friends are trying to break the 94.5 habit ~ a small part, but an attempt just the same, to shrink the station’s ratings.

We’ll keep our eyes and ears open, hoping to catch Bill on an audio stream down the road!

Now that the shock has died down on this thread, I would like to add in something. I'm a fan of oldies music, the type that KOOL plays. When I moved to Phoenix back in 2000, I found KOOL right away. Even though I mostly listen to talk radio/sports talk genres I have a button set (actually the first button) to KOOL and I check it out often.

I considered writing a message several times about Bill Gardner, how I thought he did a great job. I liked his easy-going manner. I was happy when John Michaels (who was my first favorite traffic reporter in PHX) received an expanded role on the show. I thought Maria Knight added a good vibe. But Bill drove the train. I will miss him but will still tune into KOOL.

Last point: was it me, or was the rage over the firing contained to this board? I checked the 2 Valley newspapers and the 5 major TV websites and didn't find anything. Tim & Willy got great press but it seems like Gardner went out with a whimper.

Tim and Willy got huge press because of their high profile in the community. They've spent hundreds of off-air hours involved in special charities.

Outside of work, Gardner kept a relatively low profile in the community.

Have you been to Bill's home page? He has posted some airchecks including 13 minutes of his broadcast on Feb. 7, 2008--his last day!! Miss him terribly.

Can you believe it's been a month today? A crappy month.

That aircheck ends just about when I had to turn off my CD player/Radio to get to class. I wish it included the last half hour of the show that day! Did anybody say or hint to anything?? I don't think so, but I could be wrong.

You can google Bill Gardner KOOL and find it or http://www.billgardnerontheradio.com/home
Enjoy the airchecks & interviews--they are great.
Lauren--I turned my radio (arrived at work) right after the Purina promo... last I heard Bill on the radio. I remember his first broadcast with KOOL and now, unfortunately, I will always remember his last. What a wonderful 9 years. Guess we couldn't expect it to go on forever, after all he always said it was a crazy business he worked in, but that doesn't make it any easier for us 'Bill Gardner Loyal Listeners".

inissac--aka Former KOOL fm loyal listener...

Yes, it's been a lousy month without Bill and any fuss has certainly died down. Never saw a word about the CBS terminations in the local press -- I wonder why. But, loyal listeners will continue to miss Bill, no matter how much KOOL changes schedules to try and capture share. His site is great, and he's a true gentleman -- hope he finds a way to let his KOOL listeners know where he goes so we can find him -- if not local, then streaming from somewhere.

In honor of a month without Bill, there will be a candlelight vigil at Phoenix Baptist Church on Central Ave. in Phoenix. "We Shall Overcome" will be one of the oldies sung in memoriam. Power to the Bill Gardner people.

All the while....John Michaels has half the office pool peeing in their pants with laughter before they arrive for work.

John Michaels has always made me laugh... even when he was with Bill. I listen to tv news while I'm getting ready for work, but would make sure I was in the car and driving while John read his news. I could get more from John's 2 to 3 minute news than I could from 45 minutes of tv news! Even with the limited amount of time he had John was always a benefit to Bill's show.

I now get my radio news from ktar in both my drive to and from work. Not too thrilled with Mack in the afternoon, but he'll probably grow on me. If I want music I go to kslx. Someone said Bill did the same ole thing everyday... sports, airline & Vegas. Well, I love all kinds sports and spent 10 years of my life traveling around the world, including Vegas. Bill was a perfect match for my tastes. Would love to see him get a job in Phx and steal all the former loyal kool listeners away from kool. It would serve them right.

Another song for the Gardner tribute is Brown Eyed Girl. Nurse Jeff and I'll pe passing out printed lyrics for those who somehow don't know them! Just look for the '76 Gremlin Levi's Special that's usually circling around 5300 N Central looking for any signs of life

Candlelight vigil? Singing "Brown Eyed Girl"? (it should actually be Spinners' "I'll Be Around")...

One thing I can tell you is that us Bill Gardner loyal listeners have more smarts than that angry KXL (Portland) listener who drove his/her car into the station's lobby. Crazy, and I just had to throw that in... (See here: http://kxl.com/tabid/72/itemid/15406/Upset-Listener-Crashes-Into-KXL-Building.aspx)

Dr. Akbar, do you think your Gremlin would make it through glass like that? ;D

Of course it would. But my hunch is the glass window costs more to replace than the Gremlin! ;D

Well, it's been two months now.... I thought I'd touch up on the topic and see if anyone's
heard any rumors out there of where Bill Gardner may be hired next? Phoenix or beyond.

Gee, and now CBS wants give away a million dollars in the month of April... ???

I've been checking his personal web site but it hasn't changed to indicate if/when he has landed. Think I'll send him an email.....

I had an email conversation with Bill just yesterday. Nothing to report.

I told Bill that I have been KOOL-free since they let him go. (I now listen to 50's Sirius radio - station 5.)
Here is some of his reply.

Thanks for checking on "the Old Captain." It's been exactly two months today since I completed my final show and got "the news." Come to think of it, I've been KOOL-free that long too, but I appreciate it more that YOU are!

As others here have stated, I am sure Bill will land on his feet, I just hope it isn't outside the Phoenix market. I sent an email to KOOL regarding this, but I think I should let CBS know that I have stopped listening to KOOL since they let Bill go. Anyone have a name and address for the person that should get my letter?

As much as I respect and admire Bill he, from my experience, is sometimes hard to get ahold of. I have e.mailed him a couple times with NO response back and I used to work with him in the past? Didn't return phone calls often either. A little hard to pin down.

I wish him nothing but the best. He is a class act and a talented radio pro.

That's weird thirdticket. I sent an email this afternoon and had a reply about an hour later. He was also prompt the few times I emailed him when he was at KOOL.

I still listen to KOOL but only for about an hour in the morning. Tom, Maria and John are doing a good job and, as much as I liked Bill, it wasn't their fault CBS decided to change horses. It isn't the same though.

I was kind of hoping he would land on his feet in Phx radio. Maybe there just isn't as much money in this market as there once was.
