Bill Hader on SNL 10/11/14

Former castmember Bill Hader guest hosted tonight's episode and it was easily better than the two previous shows hosted by Chris Pratt and Sarah Silverman.

Bill is starring in a new movie with former castmember Kristen Wiig so, of course, Kristen joined Bill during the monologue, along with actor Harvey Fierstein because Kristen was trying to get Bill to sing but Bill was worried that his voice was too low and it sounded like Harvey. Get it?? So, Harvey came on and the three of them sang.

Kristen came back later in a lame Hollywood Game Night sketch. She played Kathie Lee Gifford, Bill played Al Pacino, and Kate McKinnon played Jane Lynch (the best of the three).

Bill brought back his character of veteran reporter Herb Welch which was ok.

Fortunately, we were also treated to the return of Stefon on Weekend Update during which Bill couldn't keep a straight face. Stefon, of course, is "married" to former Update anchor Seth Myers who did not appear but Stefon announced that they were pregnant. Stefon referred to anchors Colin and Michael as Obama and Mitt.

Speaking of Update, I'm liking Michael Che very much and he definitely seems to be getting more airtime than Colin. I'm still not liking Colin Jost very much at all. I predict he won't be back next season.

I was hoping for a return of Kenan Thompson's What's Up With That in which Bill always played Lindsay Buckingham who never got to speak because Kenan's character always ran long on time. Sadly, it didn't appear and that sketch has probably run its course plus two of the background characters (Fred Armisen's sax player and Jason Sudeikis's exercise guy) have left the show.

Musical guest was Hozier ( had never heard of them). Kristen introduced their second number.

There was a very touching tribute to former 86-91 castmember Jan Hooks who passed away last Thursday. Kristen and Bill introduced a film from back in the day that featured Jan and Phil Hartman.

SNL returns on October 25th with Jim Carrey and Iggy Azalea.

I don't like Stefon but I sure enjoyed seeing him break up.

The best thing about the Herb Welch sketch was theat great looking school in the background. I wonder what it was.

I considered Bill Hader my favorite actor on the show during the brief time he was on it when I was watching regularly, thanks to those prime-time reruns, but now I don't know what was so great about him. He's very talented. Maybe that's what I was thinking about.

I liked the music with the Jan Hooks tribute.

The early episode was from Jan Hooks' years. Since my TiVo said Paul McCartney was the musical guest and The B52s played instead, my guess is they switched to one that featured her. Dana Carvey was listed as a cast member on my TiVo, so I don't know precisely what was done.

I didn't know what she looked like, so I don't know what she did in the early episode.

Until Jan passed away, they were slated to run an edited 60-minute episode from 1993. The episode which ran ended up being Alec Baldwin's first time hosting in April of 1990.

Getting back to Bill Hader, some of the reason he gets the giggles is because his jokes get changed at nearly the last minute. Often he's not told about the changes. One of the big reasons for that is fellow comedian and collaborator John Mulaney, who now has his own show on FOX.
