BILL O VS. BAUERLE

The WECK promos for Bill O'Loughlin's shows are pretty interesting, with fans of 1230 AM leaving voicemail messages listing reasons why they like Bill O's program and don't care for Tom Bauerle's act on WBEN.

The one quote that stands out is from a listener who calls Bauerle "a narcasistic, impolite, little dwarf."

Ouch.

Thoughts on the promos, the battle for listeners weekdays on the late-morning shift and can anyone tell us if a dwarf can be classified as "little" or aren't all dwarfs and midgets already labeled as little?

Hey, why let a little redundancy get in the way of an attention-getting promo? ;-)

Seriously, it'll be interesting to see if WECK gets any traction in this war at all, or if its shortcomings in signal strength and marketing budget prevent it from making a dent in WBEN's armor. This isn't like the 60s, when WYSL's programming was able to make some inroads into KB's dominance of the hit radio field by grabbing a lot of city and inner-ring burb listenership...the potential audience for both WBEN and WECK (adults who are in the main 50+ white males given the way both stations program today) is living in the suburbs where WBEN's signal strength gives it an edge 24/7.

I was traveling from deep in the Southtowns to the Northtowns yesterday morning and had a chance to sample both shows. Bill O is simply not a talk show host. It takes a certain amount of talent to do this, and he doesn't have it. He just rambles on and on. I didn't hear one call during the time I listened. It's just not a very good show. I switched over to WBEN. And though I disagree with just about everything that comes out of his mouth, I will say that Tom Bauerle KNOWS how to do a talk radio show. He's a broadcaster who knows what he's doing.

You'd think from reading this board that WECK is a factor in this market. It isn't! That's why WBEN and WGR are ignoring the attacks coming from WECK. Unless WECK develops an audience -- and after three years on the air with this format, it shows no sign of doing so -- WECK will remain a fringe AM format. George Kramer, I love your enthusiasm. But why the fixation on WECK and its silly campaign against WBEN and WGR?

It's not a competition, and I'm disappointed that BillO has agreed to do such negative ads. He's feeding right into what Bauerle attempts to do with his persona. At least in the political genre and these lame attempts to fight with WBEN, WECK just really REALLY doesn't get it.

Why would you listen to either when there's much better - and more rational - talk programming available on either WBFO or WNED-AM?

I actually think those ads are in pretty poor taste. I am not a fan of Baurle at all, but calling him a little dwarf is just wrong, IMO. For one, his height has nothing to do with anything. And, for two, I'm sure any little people listening have to be offended that they are running that. Would they run somebody that says he's "an impolite little retard?" I hope not.

A wise man once said, "It's not the length of the wand that pulls the rabbit out of the hat, it's the magic in the performer."

Hmmm...there's a line there somewhere...

I heard Sandy Beach today on the ride back home from the airport and he was talking about something financial related and he said "I'm no Bill O'Loughlin or anything but...." and then finished his point.

OOPS!!!

I doubt that was a mistake, George. WECK would like to think that Bill O. has any impact. Then again, he needs to have good enough numbers to keep paying for his block of time on WECK.

If Bill-O has any sense of decency he'll send Beach a check for the free pub. Sounds like Beach was trying to be funny. O'Loughlin is talking to himself on WECK. He couldn't get arrested if he drove down Genesee street in reverse. Doing 80. During morning drive.

George, old habits die hard especially for old men like Sandy! Over the years, Beach has spent a good part of his career talking about, and knocking, the competition while on the air.

Direct quote from Brad:

"It's not fair that Tom Bauerle gets three hours and Bill only gets two when Bill does a better show than he does."

He's trying to keep WECK in the discussion (and yes, I know I am too with my many posts about WECK vs. Entercom Buffalo) and now takes another direct shot at Tommy B.

Bill O is his ammunition, along with an Arbitron ratings number of 0.9.

Good luck Brad. It should be interesting. Hopefully Bill O will allow in-studio guests and interview guests over the phone to help get through the three hours each day. 180 minutes of Bill with very few callers may be tough for most to stomach.

We will have to wait and see.
