He's going into the georgia radio hall of fame. Very deserving.
 
Absolutely! For 3 years Bill was a great boss and a fun guy to be around. Though I competed with him in the morning for several years, I really felt I had arrived when I got to fill in for him a few times. This is a great year for Macon radio - Hamp Swain's induction in the Ga. Music Hall of Fame and Bill Powell's in the Ga. Radio Hall of Fame two weeks later. Both true pioneers in Macon radio and genuine legends. Both of these men understood the value of personal appearances, judging contests, emcee-ing events, etc. better than any broadcasters I've ever known. Either one of these guys could have gone on to bigger markets and I'm sure they had plenty of offers. But both of these guys really loved Macon, and we're a better city because they each chose to stay here. Congratulations to Bill and Hamp. I look forward to hearing Hamp's induction speech, and wish that Bill was still with us to deliver his.
 
Mr Powell was great to work with. As a new engineer at channel 13 I learned quickly that if you hear a string of expletives coming down the hall to automatically head for his office because the weather computers were acting up again.

First Gil Patrick and now Bill Powell. Like Lewis Grizzard, a great American, once said, "Elvis is dead and I don't feel so good myself".
 
With sufficient aircheck material, a good editor could let Bill give his own acceptance speech.
And, the crowd would probably love to hear some of his famous lines. ;)
 
I spoke at Bill Powell's retirement dinner which was aired on 13WMAZ. His heartfelt words at the end of the evening were incredible, as usual. He was not well then and emphysema was taking its toll. But he was "Bill" true to form. At that dinner everyone from Max Cleland, Jimmy Waters to Gen. Scott all honored his career and public service. I am sure 'MAZ would have that program and his comments in the archives somewhere. I'm looking forward to seeing Sandy accept the award in late September.
