Bill "Smoochi" Gordon Passes Away

Cleveland radio legend Bill "Smoochie" Gordon passed away on Thursday December 18th, 2008. He was 83 years old. Bill worked in radio and televison which included stops at WEWS TV 5 where he hosted a show with Cleveland great Dorothy Fuldheim called "The One O'Clock Club", and also landed jobs at WHK 1420 AM, WERE 1300 AM, WBBG 1260 AM, and also WHBQ in Memphis where Bill hired a man named Dewey Phillips who later became well known when Dewey was the first DJ to play a Elvis Presley record. Bill did not want to be known as a DJ, but rather a Entertainer. He locked himself in the studio once because he wanted to play a record 14 times in a row...Bill always signed off his radio show by saying "Stay Smoochie-You Rascal You"...and will be missed very much here in Cleveland.

I only met Bill briefly a few times, way after the height of his career. I'd see him around Cleveland every so often at different events - if I recall correctly, he liked to play guitar and sang so I guess he really did consider himself an entertainer more than a DJ.

So I'm not adding much but I wanted to post a godspeed to a Cleveland original. Kind of sad how a topic like this draws so few responses. Look at the Herb Score thread - two replies? Geeeez.

It was a rough year for Cleveland listeners as we lost many in 2008 including Kay Woods from WCLV, Wes Hopkins, Jackson Armstrong, Scott Burton, Odessa Still from WABQ/WJMO, Gib Shanley, Fred Embracia, Chris Quinn, Jack Reynolds and Bill Gordon...R.I.P
