Per Spanish langauge radio board radionotas.com, Bill Tanner is now consulting Radio One's KROI in Houston following the departure of Fernando Pérez last month.

Practice you high school Spanish with this....

Cool, Babel Fish at altavista.com gave me "gadgets."
It's always fun until someone puts an eye out.

My amoretz releasing New Year, because obvious there are new gadgets! and in it as occasion I want to greet my adored people of Houston TX, by the way found out that way that now that Fernando Perez I let work for One Radio, Mr. Bill Tanner very will be involved directly with "Mere, the Mere one" that by the way counts the bad languages that the name does not go to him, because there the one that raffle is "Latin Estereo", it has but they are not possible to be shut up, for soon have distill its poison, but good they tell me that "Mere, the Mere one" it will have great changes so agárrense because often the changes are very good.

Rough translation:

Happy New Year. Radio One has seen that you guys at the r-i board are talking mess about our Hispanic initiative and the lack of ratings for our once hyped "La Mera Mera". Well, stick this in your eye..We've hired a consultant, and with his magic dust, and a few tricks up his sleeve, he will bring our beloved KROI out of the doldrums and into the top rated station in the entire market. This will involve some subtle changes like an increase of population in the unemployment line, removing those pesky popular, but rarely heard, songs from our playlist, and then when all of that fails we will completely ditch the format...which is what you guys wanted in the first place, but that's not important. We hope you enjoy the new "La Mera Mera". It ain't got the "Tom Joyner Morning Show" yet, but Mad Hatta said he'd fill in until we got it VT'ed.

Thanks,

Sounds like Radio One might try a relaunch of KROI to see if a major retooling of their Hispanic initiative results in some better numbers. They're really going to have to pull out the stops to make any significant dent in the Univision wall of stations.

This might keep La Mera Mera (or whatever the new name might be) alive for a couple more books, but my money is on the Hispanic initiative eventually fizzling, resulting in a flip to something more in line with RO's traditional African-American target demos.

David, meant to ask earlier...what do you know about this guy? What other stations has he consulted?

He was Cece Heftel's programming guru first at 13-Q in Pittsburgh and then at Y 100 in Miami, wherhe he had the #1 statin and morning show for a decade. He then did Hot in Mimi, followed by Power 96 which he still consults.

For a decade, he has had #1 and #2 in Birmingham with Cox's urbans. He consults other stations, too.

In 1995 he led the LA Heftel team that propelled first KLVE and then KSCA into #1 and #2 in LA, and we put Amor in Miami, for a decade the #1 biller there, on the air together, too.

He left HBC in 2000 to be VP of PRogramming for SBS, where he oversaw their stations in LA, SF, Miami, PR, NY and Chicago.

He is one of the best programmers in America... and a terrific morning guy, too.

Sounds like Radio One is finally getting serious and bringing in a big gun...the impending changes on KROI should be significant and obvious. I suppose a thorough background in both Hispanic and Urban formats is an excellent fit for the RO stable of stations.

I'll be curious if they keep the La Mera Mera name or go for a complete relaunch under different branding.

Just a hunch, but I would think that La Mera Mera will be history and KROI goes for a whole new image. I have to say I am curious what the new station will be though. There is very little Radio One can do on the Urban side without cutting into the numbers that KMJQ or KBXX have now. I don't see another Hurban station with Clear Channel staying with the format at this time. My lack of knowledge in Spanish language stations has me wondering what would be a new or different format in Spanish or Spanglish that would be a hit with the Hispanic audience and possibly even those that usually listen to English language stations. The last station I recall being a hit with both the Hispanic and Anglo listeners was the KQQK 106.5 of the mid 1980's. Should be interesting when the "new" 92.1 hits the air. Sounds like RO has hired someone that will be able to program a station that will be a real contender though.
