Bill Watson, WNCN-FM, New York

I would like to remember, and read others' memories of, Bill Watson, who graced the midnight-to-eight a.m. airwaves nightly on WNCN-FM, New York, in and around the 1960s. Bill served that classical music venue largely on his own terms, delivering the greatest masters of the Baroque and Classical periods with spiky, sometimes corporately incorrect, ad lib commentary. For example, one night he played a nearly four-hour-long oratorio of Bach uninterrupted, then announced that it was so good he would play it again—immediately. He weathered the predictable tensions with the station authorities for several years. I missed his program sorely when I moved away from the listening area for college.
