Bill Wightman makes a big mistake

Over at NortheastShooters.com there is a thread about WTTK's benching VayCay Jay.

One of the posters suggested contacting the WTTK advertisers to bring pressure to bear on Greater Media to re-instate Jay

One of the posters got a really nasty reply from Bill Wightman.
Bill apparently does some marketing work for Reeds Ferry Sheds, a WTTK/WROR advertiser.

Bill used to do mornings on WXKS AM IIRC, and when they flipped he went to WBOQ 104.9 and lasted about 3 weeks IIRC. Last I heard he was at Metro Traffic, but he might have been blown out in the last round of cuts, I don't know. He was also teaching at that fine broadcasting institution CSB (close cover before striking) but I'm pretty sure when they went belly up he was out the door there too.

The thread at NortheastShooters is here:
http://www.northeastshooters.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=64830

The first post has the response from Bill Wightman, and burried down on page 11 post #106, the owner of Reeds Ferry Sheds, who was bombarded with emails and phone calls from people, says he has terminated Bill Whightmans contract

he also says that he will wait for the outcome of the Jay situation before investing more money in ad buys there.

"I own Reeds Ferry Sheds. This post is in response to an e-mail generated by our former e-mail marketing vendor. He has never worked directly for Reeds Ferry Sheds and his e-mail services have been discontinued. When a customer had requested info for my product he was responsible for sending out our company e-mail brochure. His comments were "unacceptable." As Mr. Severin feels angry that he was taken "out of context," I believe my company is being "bashed" unfairly for a statement made be someone who is not associated with us. Reeds Ferry Sheds is a strong supporter of Mr. Severin. But before we determine any further advertising investment with the station we are awaiting the final outcome of his status."

Sounds like a classical lose-lose situation. Wightman probably should not have posted anything. Although he has a surprising number of fans, he probably had fewer fans than Severin did, even before he (Wightman) wrote his post. My take is that, although Wightman should have bitten his tongue (or put hands in his pocket) before approaching his computer keyboard to type his message, what he had to say was spot on, and very wittily put, in keeping with his radio persona.

Thanks to the reply from the owner of the shed company, the company will now lose sales to Mr Wightman's fans! Although, as I said, there may be a smaller number of Wightman fans than Severin fans, if you subtract what the shed company spent on adverising on WTKK from the profits that resulted from those ads, the shed company might have been ahead financially if it had never advertised on WTKK. Which goes to show why some adverisers are loathe to support issue-oriented talk shows that have any political agenda whatsoever.

The shed company might have been money ahead if it had not advertised on WTKK, but Wightman and WTKK would have lost money. In other words, just like in the old aphorism, WTKK and Wightman couldn't win for losing;>(

Seems to me that the obvious thing is to give the e-mail marketing gig to Severin, he isn't busy right now and apparently the shed buyers really like him.

I know this post & thread are a week old now, but I'm just seeing it for the first time and just have to say this comment gave me my best chuckle of the day! lol. ;D Have you called Jay and suggested this as a possible solution to him?

So, we could say that WTKK has "shed" itself of its Jay Severin problem?

Clever pun, but no, it doesn't seem to be final yet, at least not as of today. Curtis filled in again, and still under the heading of "The Jay Severin Show".
