Bill Wippel

We lost a true legend in northwest radio on Sunday when Bill Wippel passed away. This is the man who launched KIRO radio's news format in 1976 and guided it to the early success it had. Among his hires was a fresh-faced kid named Dave Ross. But Bill did so much more: after several stints in eastern Washington radio he became News Director of KOL in 1964 and later worked at KIXI. He was a TV anchor at the old KTNT in Tacoma, and in recent years was the long-time Director of Community Relations (and the face) of the Union Gospel Mission in Seattle. He was a faithful reader and contributor to this discussion board, usually offering a voice of reason in a sea of anonymous negativity. RIP Bill!

Is there an obituary or do you have any other details? Have seen him about three times in about the last 5 years and am sorry to hear of this.

Last I heard from him he was so upbeat and positive about tackling his latest health challenge. There a lot of nice people in the biz but Whip was at the top. RIP my friend.

I had the honor of being fired by Bill back in 1970-somthing when he was a station manager at KORD Pasco. He did it so nicely that afterwards I wasnt exactly sure if I was out of a job or not..
