Bill Wright Friday at 5pm on HyLitRadio.com Live Broadcast Dance Party

I am pleased to confirm that Bill Wright will guest host with me this Friday night’s HyLitRadio.com Live Broadcast Dance Party starting at 5pm from the Quality Inn Philadelphia International Airport, 45 Industrial Hwy, in Essington. Bill was one of the ‘Good Guy’s’ DJ’s at Philadelphia’s legendary WIBG Radio 99 in the 50’s and 60’s. He’ll be sharing many of the great stories that he and I have shared through the years from the early day's of Rock and Roll, to his present status on the Board of Directors of the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia. Bill has a wealth stories including working the early years for Storer Broadcasting's #1 rated WBRC in Birmingham when Storer was forced to acquired WIBG as part of the deal to but WVUE channel 12 Wilmington De. That led to bill being transferred to Philadelphia. Storer ultimately returned the channel 12 license to the FCC but kept WIBG, which became the legend of radio in Philadelphia and beyond for the next decade. WIBG began life as a 500 watt church station in 1925, but came alive to be a 50,000 watt giant after Storer flipped WIBG to Rock and Roll, brought in Bill Wright for mornings, Joe Niagra for afternoons, and Hired Hy Lit from 1060/WRCV for nights. Bill will also be talking about the brief transfer to Storer's 1050/WHN in New York that preceded the strike at WIBG in 1962, that ultimately brought him back to Philadelphia, this time to stay. Bill also anchored the Station of the Stars, WPEN during their hey days. Bill is a true radio legend. Be there and enjoy the free buffet starting at 5pm or hear it live on HyLitRadio.com. Look for the HyLitRadio '57 Chevy on location Friday Night.

Did you know that Bill also hosted a kiddie show on WBRC TV in Birmingham?

A true radio legend! I met Bill in the early 70's when I was thinking about going to his Columbia School of Broadcasting. I was actually interviewed personally by him and remember him telling me how he made a wapping $50,000 when Wibbage was on top! I guess tha would be like half a million today.

Bill is a wonderful person and I will be recording the show on Friday. There was a death in the family and I have a wake to go to Friday night.

I decided to get my FCC license instead and work on the technical end. Some days I wish I didn't. Does anyone know whatever happened to Bills school of broadcasting?

Also I noticed that Bill handicap which was never mentioned on air, when I met him I was too nervous to ask. But I remeber him saying "how proud his parents were of him despite his handicap.

In addition I remember how one of his kids joined him on the air as "Bill Wright Junior". That's why he was know as Bill Wright Sr. I understand his son has since passed away. I think it was some sort of accident.

I worked briefly at Ch. 17 in the 60's and at least one of my pictures are on the Broadcast Pioneers web site.
