It's with sadness that I read about the passing of another one of Houston's radio legends. Bill Zak passed away on Tuesday while in hospice care. He was 86 years old. I had the pleasure of working with him and Ben Oldag while at KTRH, back in the early 80s. I had an early shift and the two of them did the farm show, each day, at that same time of the morning. Later on, he hosted the Garden Line Show. Bill was one of radio's old-timers. He came to work at KTRH back in the early days of their operation from the Rice Hotel, and stayed with them for almost 50 years. Quite a record for a Houston air personality. Godspeed Bill!

I worked with Bill Zak for years and I learned a lot from him -- about as down-to-earth a man as you would ever meet. He and I shared a lot of laughs and I have wonderful memories of a very dear -- a very kind man. I have missed working with him and will miss him more now that he has left this earthly plane. Dan Rather wrote fondly of Bill in his book "The Camera Never Blinks." All my sympathy to his family. God bless you Bill. I'll see you on the other side.

Visitation at 10:30, service to follow at 11am
Saturday October 29, Earthman Hunters Creek Funeral Home, 8303 Katy Freeway (More on Bill in Chronicle obit.)
