It seems to be doing fine in the ATL, but they do have an interesting article about it. (May 19 print)
The article mourns the loss of WRKS New York which recently went sports/talk. They say the
Arbitron PPM is what took the station down......the PPM is by the minute whereas the old diary
system was not. PPM shows that people do not listen as long to stations as once thought.
Adult R&B really came into it's own in the 90's (as an alternative to the Hip-Hop scene for older
adults). The article points out that was a long time ago and the lines between the two formats
are more blurred today. It's not unusual for Adult R&B stations to add a mainstream artist who
has already been proven at traditional stations (like WVEE). Stations must now consider being
true to the format or EXPANDING with mainstream artists. Which makes it harder to break for-
mat artists. The loss of WRKS just underscores the many challenges the sub-genre must deal
with today and in the years ahead.
