Billboard Charts

I'm sorry but I don't know where to put this so please move it to the right category.

Has anyone noticed that the Billboard Charts for CHR, Hot AC or AC airplay no longer exist? I used to check on them once a week before they moved them behind a paywall but now, they're gone completely! These charts are almost as old as the Hot 100 itself! Country and Urban are still intact. At first, I thought it was an oversight but it's been going on for awhile.

What you're seeing may be related to the changeover from BDS to Mediabase:

Billboard charts used to be based on BDS. They switch to Mediabase on Tuesday.

It's possible but as I said, it's been going on for awhile, probably since the update several months ago. It dawned on me about a month ago. I'd say at least half of the charts are missing!

The whole thing with Billboard is they've been phasing out of the airplay-only business. That happened when they announced their Hot 100 would incorporate non-airplay numbers such as streaming. So it's possible they're de-emphasizing those charts on their public site, but still offering it to subscribers to their format-only newsletters. Are you a subscriber?

No but most of the charts that are still there are behind paywalls and are labeled as such. It isn't that I can't access the other charts. It's that there's no indication that they even exist!

I believe tomorrow morning will be the final BDS survey before the switch to Mediabase. I wonder if the BB radio data is being wiped out the way Radio & Records' data was effectively erased from history. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow is actually the first Mediabase-driven survey.

Two different things: When R&R was bought by Billboard, they changed the source for R&R charts from Mediabase to BDS. In this case, Billboard is retaining their reporters and methodologies and just using Mediabase data. BB has spent the past month communicating with their radio reporters.

I'm not aware that Billboard does daily charts, but perhaps they do. Billboard's chart week ends Sunday at midnight. Most of their charts are released today. Tomorrow's data will come from Mediabase, and it will impact the next chart, released next Monday.

Understood. Thank you for the information.

It appears that all the BDS charts have all ceased to exist. As a Billboard subscriber they’re still listing the airplay charts (Pop, Pop Adult, Rhythmic, R&B/Hip-Hop, Country, and Dance/Mix Show) for now. Only time will tell if Billboard will tabulate any Mediabase data into the primary charts.

I posted this link earlier. Here it is again. BDS shut down on Monday. All future charts will use Mediabase starting next week:

I was aware about the article already. And yes, Billboard just announced that it’ll start using Mediabase with the November 12, 2022 issue but will continue separate reporting panels for the time being. So in a nutshell, Mediabase will release the radio charts on Tuesday as usual but Billboard will retain its established radio charts compiled by its reporting panel list. I’m not sure about how this can work but anything can happen.

Will this have any noticeable impact on the airplay we get on most CHR’s?
No. Very few significant radio stations use Billboard charts for airplay guidance and it has been that way for 50 years or so.

Back in the day, we used "tip sheets" like Gavin and Hamilton and FMQB and, later, R&R. Now, we use a combination of MediaBase (and until this week, BDS) and out own station-based or corporate "call out" current music research.

New adds are based on our own feel about each song, analysis of the adds at stations we "like" in other markets plus streaming data.

Billboard will retain its established radio charts compiled by its reporting panel list. I’m not sure about how this can work but anything can happen.

The main thing is they retain their methodology, which works Monday to Sunday, while Mediabase charts work Sunday to Saturday. Billboard also holds songs longer, while Mediabase has a two week rule (two weeks without a bullet). Mediabase rules are based on the old R&R rules from the 90s.

Will this have any noticeable impact on the airplay we get on most CHR’s?

No. Charts measure airplay, not the other way around.

From the article posted on Billboard (November 3, 2022):

Airplay charts (based on audience and/or plays) finalized Monday, Nov. 7 (dated Nov. 12), will be the first using Mediabase data. Individual-format airplay charts dated Nov. 12 will reflect airplay tracked Monday, Oct. 31, through Sunday, Nov. 6. The Nov. 12-dated Radio Songs chart, which serves as the airplay chart component to the all-genre, multi-metric Billboard Hot 100(which also blends streaming and sales data, as compiled by Luminate), and reflects a Friday-Thursday cycle, will incorporate BDS data for Oct. 28-30 and Mediabase data for Oct. 31-Nov. 3 (with Mediabase data to power Radio Songs thereafter).

Billboard will continue to maintain unique charts and reporter panels, separate from Mediabase’s, for all formats. Upon the change, Billboard will continue to incorporate all current reporting stations that are also monitored by Mediabase for Billboard’s charts. Billboard and Mediabase aim to add additional reporting stations going forward.

Meanwhile, weekly and year-end Billboardcharts will continue to be compiled via the same parameters previously applied with BDS data. (Year-end airplay rankings will continue to reflect songs’ activity while on corresponding weekly charts.)

Along with Radio Songs, Billboard’s United States-based airplay charts encompass: Pop Airplay (Mainstream Top 40); Adult Pop Airplay (Adult Top 40); Adult Contemporary; Country Airplay; Rock & Alternative Airplay; Alternative Airplay; Adult Alternative Airplay (Triple A); Mainstream Rock Airplay; R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay; Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay; Adult R&B Airplay; Rap Airplay; Rhythmic Airplay; Latin Airplay; Regional Mexican Airplay; Latin Pop Airplay; Latin Rhythm Airplay; Tropical Airplay; Christian Airplay; Christian AC Airplay; Gospel Airplay; Dance/Mix Show Airplay; Smooth Jazz Airplay; and the seasonal Holiday Airplay chart.
